Practical Activities

Use of the whiteboard/100 square/number lines/purse and money to practice the above.

Use of dominoes: pupils add the two sides of a domino. What is the smallest total? What is the biggest total? This can be made into a game, with the pupils keeping a running total of their scores – the winner has the highest total.

Playing cards can also be used – pupils take it in turns to turn over and add the totals of two cards. Again, this can be made into a game. This can be used for addition/subtraction.

Straws can be used: different ways of making 20.

Rolling/adding the totals of 2 or 3 dice together.

Using 100 squares/number lines to assist with addition/subtraction.

Include addition/subtraction with money – again, practical activities are useful.

Role play – addition/subtraction in the shop/supermarket etc. Shopping lists can be devised and bills can be calculated (simple addition/subtraction).

Addition/subtraction/counting in the school grounds.

Talking partners/group activity finding all possible additions & subtractions which make 18, 16 etc.

Worksheets to link with Dominoes/Dice/Card Games as above.

Worksheets to practice addition/subtraction to at least 20.

Worksheets with pictures to assist pupils who find this concept difficult. The pupils can then count the objects to add/take away.

Worksheets with word problems to link with Role Play.

Addition with 3 numbers should also be covered.

Activities to develop skills in addition/subtraction. A Maths Sack could be put together with suitable resources in – whiteboard, number line, dominoes, cards, dice etc for the pupils to take home. Suggested activities could also be included.
