KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS SCHOLARSHIPS

FOR CATHOLIC COLLEGE-BOUND SENIORS

The Knights of Columbus is a world-wide Catholic family fraternal service organization. In 1991, Council 9884 in Lewisville decided to honor a worthy senior from LHS and MHS. In 1993, the Council along with Pope Paul VI Assembly 2291 decided to stipulate that the winners be practicing Catholics. Once again, this year the local Lady Knights have added a significant contribution to the scholarship fund. Past winners from LHS have been Billy Zimmerer, Mona Harpavat, Melissa Sager, Amanda Carson, Tina Baca, Chris Kopenec, Ian Cranston, Thy Nguyen, Mark Huthmaker, Joseph Nguyen, Patricia McKinley, Elisabeth Flottman, Jennifer Gelzleichter, Girard Ona, Erin McKinley, Danielle Wilson, Melissa Courtad, Mallory Molina, Melissa Antony, Andrea Bonilla, Jeremy Leing, Adam Bonilla, and Michael Jimenez.

Past winners from Marcus High School are Leo Hanus, Holly Harris, Christy Beford, Jackie Bauer, Scott Fitzgerald, Molly Totman, Catherine Bordelon, Elizabeth Frost, Brighid O’Donnell, Joseph Gama, Katie Kapurch, Sarah Horsch, Emily Gruninger, Derek Junek, Margaret Mitchell, Mardie Kay Thompson, Michael Wallace, Stephen Hall, Kerstie Moran, Lane Granberry, Matt Nacier, Nick Sparks, Nick Hill, Cassie Lucio, Sean Duffy, Grant Andries, and Brittany Niederstadt.

In 2002, the scholarships expanded to include a worthy Catholic senior from Flower Mound High School. Past winners from FMHS are Angela Garcia, Philip Hernandez, Sue Lynn Walker, J.P. Quinn, Rebecca Jo Walker, Victor Benavides, Christopher Giuffreda, Kyle Dubek, Michael Heyen, Jason Laico, Katie Standefer, Spenser Harvey, Lauren O’Brien, and Anna Grady.

This year, Council 9884, the Lady Knights, and Assembly 2291 offer five $600 cash scholarships to high school seniors.

ELIGIBILITY:

AT LEAST ONE SCHOLARSHIP WILL BE AWARDED TO A CATHOLIC COLLEGE-BOUND SENIOR FROM EACH OF THESE THREE HIGH SCHOOLS: Lewisville High, Marcus High, and Flower Mound High. These three students’ parents need not necessarily attend St. Philip the Apostle or Our Lady of Lebanon, nor must the student’s father be a member of Council 9884.

Additionally, a $600 cash scholarship will be awarded to each of the next two highest applicants in the judges’ scoring. These two Catholic students may come from LHS, MHS, and FMHS. Also, Catholic students who attend a Catholic high school are eligible for these two scholarships, provided the student attends St. Philip the Apostle or Our Lady of Lebanon and/or the student’s father is a member of Council 9884.

In addition to the $600 cash scholarship, the five winners, along with their parents, will be honored at the Knights of Columbus Founder’s Day Dinner in March.

Application for the scholarship entails completing 1) the attached brief cover sheet, 2) an activity sheet signed by a church official (e.g. youth minister, sacristan, pastor) and a school official (e.g. counselor, assistant principal, student council director), and 3) an essay (Please see attached guidelines).
