Grand Knight’s Report

Joe Panchik, Grand Knight

KNIGHTS IN ACTION

We are upon the final quarter of the fraternal year, and it appears there is no stopping our energized council. For the upcoming meeting set for April 6th, we have first degree scheduled at 10804. We are set to welcome three candidates into Council 10804, so let’s signify the most gracious hospitality by packing the chamber on this particular evening. KUDOS goes to PGK and FS Paul Diaczun for spearheading the Winter Watch Breakfasts. He is the key as to why Church of the Holy Family and Council 10804 presents a most exceptional menu to our guests during the “Winter Watch” Program! Many thanks goes to all who assisted during this week, and in particular the wives of all the Knights who put on the final dinner for our guests. It was indeed a spectacular occasion that was enjoyed by the disadvantaged population in our community.

We have some new and important events that are coming up in our council. The State Convention, chaired by our own Pat O’Donnell is slated for May 5 – 6 & 7, so please try to attend one of their many activities. Since it is in our own back yard – The Cavalier at the Beach – we should have a strong showing in supporting Pat and representing our Council! Please sign up to cover the registration desk for a slot or two – Many Hands Make Less Work!!! Additionally, since Pat is nominated for state office, it is an ideal time to offer support and a word of encouragement to Pat and his family. Ed Hanrahan is planning the final flea market/craft show of the fraternal year on April 29. If you have any donations, please drop them off at the church on April 28 or 29. Also, please drop by to enjoy a hot dog or hamburger and to purchase one of the many treasures that will be available.

A new event for 10804 is the first annual golf tournament set for May 11! We are still accepting hole sponsorships and other donations. Donations may be in the form of hole sponsors, gift certificates, or items to be placed in the goodie bag. Please try to attend this top of the line event and support our Council. If you have any business contacts that may be interested in sponsoring our event, please forward their name and phone # to Paul Diaczan or Ed Hanrahan. For additional information, please visit our website at www.koc10804.org.

Additionally, our wives appreciation lunch/bunch is now being planned. Please pay close attention to upcoming details concerning this event. I hope all can attend this event in which we pay homage to our spouses for all of their efforts throughout the year.

In closing, I want to congratulate two very special people associated with Council 10804. My most sincere wishes to Butch Zarn and his fiancé Bonnie Rode on their upcoming nuptials set for April 8! They are indeed a very special couple, and have spread their love and energy throughout our council in innumerable ways. Congratulations to Butch & Bonnie, with many, many, MANY years of blissful marital times set for the future!

From the Deputy

Ken Geroe, Deputy Grand Knight

Brothers,

Thank you so much to the Worthy Financial Secretary, PSG Paul Diaczun and to all those brother knights that served breakfast during Winter Watch for a very successful week. Truly I believe we could have competed for a “Best in the Beach” prize”. At least that is what some of our guests told us, “guys you know how to make a mean breakfast”. PGK Bob Rodgers (the resident Grits Miester) made a protégé this session. Under his tutelage Tony Mushik has become a Grits Miester apprentice. I think all that is left to do is have Bob sign off on his practical factors. We had more participation this year and I think that those who were first timers realized that it is a fun job. Yes, there is an early reveille, and there is work involved, but after our guests board the bus, and we sit and eat breakfast together it is with the added enjoyment that we are doing what the Knights are all about. If you didn’t or couldn’t make it this year, check it out next year and experience it for yourself. We have only one major event left this month, the Family Breakfast on the 26th. But keep in mind two major events. The Golf Tournament and the State Convention need a lot of people to make it a success. Finally speaking of the convention make sure to root for PGK Pat O’Donnell who is competing for a State Officer slot! Way to go Pat! You will have earned your spurs!

From the Chancellor

Greg Brown, Chancellor

The formats, and the words used, in the 1st Degree Exemplification that we all went through to become a Knight, have just changed. The ‘book” that describes in detail exactly how the ceremony is to be conducted, and exactly which words shall be used, has just been promulgated by Supreme. Our Council’s great 1st Degree Team, ably led by Dick Carlson, need to memorize and practice the new procedures and then get “certified” as a team under the watchful eye of our own District Deputy, George Piette. The spirit and intent of the new “book” is to shorten and simplify the 1st Degree Exemplification so that it can more easily fit into one of our regular Business Meetings. The significance of the 1st Degree Exemplification has not changed. To add to the solemnity of that “first step” in the life of a brand new Knight, would you please dress up appropriately when we have our next 1st Degree. The next Council 10804 1st Degree Exemplification is now scheduled for the Thursday, 6 April 2006, Business Meeting. Please dress up a bit and participate with our own council’s 1st Degree Exemplification Team as they get recertified.

Don’t let the fact that we are already at 200% of our fraternal year recruiting goal, and are number one in the state of Virginia for recruiting slow you down! To every member of Council 10804 - you are an AWESOME team!

From the Editor,

Nominations are coming up, if you are interested in an officers position in our council please let me or the Grand Knight know.

We have a new Editor for the News Letter. Brother Mike O’Brien has volunteered to take on the job in July. If you all remember the job he did as Recorder last year then you know the job he will do as Editor. Thank You Mike for taking on this job.

Thank you to all my Brother Knights for all that they have done for me over the years. It has always been a pleasure to be associated with so many fine Gentlemen. Through the good and the bad we have always been Knights and always been Gentlemen. Thank you, again, for all of you.

Input from a Brother Knights Wife

The Mayonnaise Jar and 2 Cups of Coffee

When things in your lives seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the Mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if he jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things--your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like

your job, your house and your car. The sand is everything else---the small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.

The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

Please share this with someone you care about.

I JUST DID

Brothers,

I added this to the News Letter because sometimes we get carried away and forget the important things in life. Lets all remember what is important in life and enjoy Life and what we have and what we can do for our fellow man .
