What is UIL OAP?

UIL OAP stands for University Interscholastic League One Act Play. OAP falls under the same guidelines as any athletic or academic team. The League's theatre program is considered by historians to be the foundation of educational and community theatre in Texas. It continues to be a major factor motivating increasing numbers of schools to offer theatre arts as an academic subject.

The UIL One-Act Play contest is a competition where Texas schools present an 18-40 minute play usually adjudicated by a single judge. The contest is held on a single day and open to the public. The judge awards individual acting awards as well as selecting the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place performances. After the awards are announced the Judge gives an oral critique to each of the schools.

We will compete with our play against the other middle schools in Humble ISD. This is a great opportunity for theatre students to experience a friendly competition where they will gain both knowledge and experience, meet students with the same passions throughout the district and the opportunity to see many other performances from students at the middle school level.

Audition Expectations:

You need to have a prepared monologue that is no more than 1 minute long. If you need/want to look for any audition pieces, you may talk to Ms. McDonald, she has many to choose from. This is a closed audition, meaning each student will perform their piece in front of the director only. All students need to show up at least 10 minutes before their scheduled audition time. Once the student is done with their audition, they may leave. Sign up for a time in Room 200 in Ms. McDonald’s Office. Your audition packet must be turned in, completed and signed at time of audition.

Call Backs:

Call Back list will be posted via the theatre webpage by midnight (hopefully earlier) on Tuesday November 30th and will also be posted on Ms. McDonald’s door by 7:45 am Wednesday December 1st. If you are called back but are unable to attend the entire time, please let Ms. McDonald know before 4pm so that she can make sure you get to do some cold readings before you must leave, or wait until you get there so that you have an opportunity to read.

Script Check Out:

If you are interested in checking out a script to read before auditions you may do so. You can get them in Ms. McDonald’s room. You will have 2 days to read the script and return it.

Look at the projected KMS UIL OAP calendar and write down any conflicts that you have. Please understand that if you are chosen to be a part of the UIL OAP Company, you are accepted with the conflicts you have listed. If you have any event that conflicts with the calendar after you have accepted the position the UIL OAP rehearsal should take precedence. Any rehearsals you miss after the fact are considered unexcused unless you have prior permission from Ms. McDonald. Take the time to sit with your parents and compare the OAP calendar with your personal calendars, make sure you write down any conflict. If the UIL rehearsal times/dates change after this contract has been signed and you have a conflict it will not be counted as an unexcused absence. Also, please note that there will be rehearsals in which you may not need to attend. A more specific breakdown of what scenes will be worked will be given at the first read through after the company has been chosen.
