2703.06CURRICULUM

The State Benchmarks and the District Curriculum are minimal requirements that each student should master at each grade level. Teachers are to document the success each student and show justification as to why a student has not. At the end of school year, a report on student progress will be given to the principal for his review.

2703.07DETENTION

Teachers must complete a discipline referral form whenever sending students to the office. Any student who is sent to the office without a referral will be sent back to his/her teacher for one. Students sent to the office for behavior problems or other discipline reasons may be placed in detention. The teacher and assistant principal will determine length of detention. Parents will be contacted by letter or phone call any time students are placed in detention.

2703.08OUT OF SCHOOL SUSPENSION

Students may be suspended from school for serious discipline violations. The office will contact parents. Students will be placed in the detention room until parents arrive to pick them up.

2703.11FIRE DRILL PROCEDURE

The State Fire Marshall prescribes fire drill specifications. We are to have one per week for the first month of school and one per month thereafter. The objective of our drills is to quickly remove the children from the building in an orderly, safe manner. The teacher’s first responsibility is to provide for the safety of his/her children. Please take your class roll book outside with you and call roll as soon as possible to determine whether all children are out of the building. All windows and doors should be closed and the lights should be turned off.

2703.12EMERGENCY TORNADO DRILL PROCEDURES

When the school is alerted of a tornado danger, the following procedures will be followed:

1. The office will announce, “This is a tornado alert”, followed by a siren.

2. The teachers and students will move into the nearest hallway (away from any windows) and sit on the floor facing the wall with arms covering the head.

3. Teachers and students will remain in the hallway until an “all clear” is announced followed by a ringing bell.

2703.13GENERAL PLAYGROUND RULES

2. We will in no way threaten, injure, or fight with anyone.

3. We will respect and follow the directions of our teachers and safeties/monitors.

4. We understand no food is allowed on the playground except under special conditions.

2703.14LUNCHROOM RULES

Our main purpose for lunchroom control is to maintain a safe and pleasant environment so students can enjoy lunch.

Students will not be forced to eat or drink anything they do not want. However, students should be encouraged to at least taste their food before they dispose of it.

3. Do not run or push others

4. Do not fight

5. Be respectful of others

2703.21STUDENT ACCIDENT REPORTS

All student accidents must be reported to the nurse. The staff member supervising the injured student must complete a student accident form. Forms are available in the nurse’s office.

2703.22BAD WEATHER DAYS

On days when the children cannot go out to morning or afternoon recess, they will remain in their individual classrooms.

If lunch recess is canceled, the children will go directly to the library where the duty personnel will have a video for them to watch.

Be prepared for these days with games, music, or movies. All teachers are required to be in their classrooms during morning and afternoon recesses on these days.

The following procedures will be taken regarding schedule changes that would be required either in the starting time of school, or the dismissal time as a result of inclement weather. The district is divided up into three areas, Kirtland, Shiprock and Newcomb. In case of weather of a severe nature, we will have a schedule for starting school two hours later than normal. Should such a schedule be called for, everything would be advanced two hours; i.e., school would start two hours later than normal, bus drivers would start two hours later, etc. In case of early dismissal, school would be dismissed two hours earlier than normal. Everything would be advanced two hours earlier. The decision as to whether or not to start school later than normal, dismiss earlier, would be made by the superintendent. A system has been established so that information relative to the weather in each of these attendance areas would be monitored and forwarded to the superintendent in order for him to make the decision whether or not to carry out a revised schedule. Principals or others in the different attendance areas mentioned above should contact the transportation person responsible in their area, and he in turn will forward this information through proper channels.

Radio stations will be advised as to the schedule the district will follow in case the weather or reads warrant a change in schedule. KENN, KWYK and KNDN radio stations will be broadcasting information if it becomes necessary to alter normal starting schedules.

KES has a phone tree. Once principal is informed of any change of schedules he will start calling the phone tree.

2703.24HEALTH CARE

In the absence of nurse, secretaries, or principal, notify parent at home or work or the emergency contact person/number on the registration card. When additional help or transportation is needed, call the other schools in Kirtland for one of the other nurses.

If the emergency is severe enough, call the fire department emergency rescue number, 911, but be sure that the parents are notified.

2703.27FRIDAY AFTERNOON CLUBS*

All teachers will be involved in special activities on Friday afternoons from 1:45 P.M. to 2:35 P.M. Each teacher will select an area of interest/hobby and sponsor a club where this interest/hobby can be shared with students. We will be switching students around by grade level ONLY. If a grade level does not want to participate they may do so over a six weeks block of time and then continue clubs. All clubs must be correlated to our EPSS.

2703.28BLOCK TIMES

Block Times are reading enrichment times. When students are pulled out

of the classrooms during their Block Time, the students remaining in the regular classroom should be involved in level appropriate reading or language arts activities. This should be a time that the academically stronger students are challenged and exposed to higher level thinking activities.

After Block Time students are identified, grade level teachers may choose to further group their remaining students by abilities. This would give each grade level teacher a small group of students with a narrow skill level range for which specific activities could be presented.

This time is NOT to be used for a study period or for the presentation of core materials. The students pulled out for Block classes should not be held responsible for anything presented in the regular classroom during Block Times. It is purely a time for each student to receive instruction at his or her individual skills level.

2703.29GIFTED PROGRAM

The following procedures will be followed to ensure the BEST

quality gifted program for our students:

  1. Mrs. McCall will be our gifted resource teacher. She will coordinate and lead all parent, teacher and student gifted meetings.
  2. Gifted students will be placed with a gifted trained regular grade level teacher. Parents refusing the placement with be informed about the training program and how refusing the placement will affect the academic program for their child.
  3. If stated in the IEP, Mrs. McCall will pull gifted students to check on class work, projects and special assignments.
  4. Gifted students can go on their own field trips and workshops as arranged by Mrs. McCall.
  5. Mrs. McCall will be a resource to all the teachers who have gifted students. Helping (not doing it for them) to modify class work, making suggestions on special projects and working with students one on one when needed.
  6. Only teachers that are the assigned gifted teacher for their grade level are to meet with Mrs. McCall to discuss problems, teaching methods etc….
  7. Parent/teacher gifted meetings will be held regularly as arranged by Mrs. McCall.

2703.30ACCELERATED READER

We will be following the procedures below concerning AR:

  3. Each student must keep a daily log.
  4. Students will be allowed to read AR books ranging from a .5 above or below their reading level.
  5. STAR testing will only be done with small-motivated groups.

  9. Send only three students at a time to the library for 5 minutes max!
  10. Teachers will be held responsible for the “age appropriateness” of reading materials their students read in their classroom.
  11. After a student passes a 6th grade reading level they are out of AR reading and should be encouraged to reading appropriate materials as much as possible.

2703.31AR BANNERS
