I.Upcoming Coalition Meetings

-11/18/2015—3pm—Osborne Newman Center

-December—TBA

II.Welcome, Introductions, and Announcements

-Bobcat Court incident—Jesse provided an overview of the occurrence. Since Sunday, surveillance cameras have been placed in the area and state police have been stationed in the area in addition to increased presence of other local law enforcement agencies. Of the two victims, the ACM student received more critical injuries as he was stabbed in the chest. The FSU student has been released from the hospital and is home recovering. No further information was available as the investigation is ongoing. Don Gaster reported that he is concerned of the large gatherings occurring. He was notified by police that another large gathering occurred Monday night around 5pm.

-Homecoming at FSU this Thursday-Sunday (Oct. 15-18) Law enforcement will have additional patrols this weekend. The FCC is supporting many OT hours this weekend for FPD, FSUPD, and ACSO. Saturday night there is going to be a dance held in the P.E. Center students, alumni, and guests. Of most concern with this dance is when it ends and 1,000+ people are leaving the area.

-Tobacco grant opportunity in partnership with Kick Masters Karate Systems. After a conversation with Master

Rando of KMK, it was decided not to apply for the tobacco grant this year.

-October is National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month. Jesse shared some information provided by CADCA— Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America. He advised prescription drug abuse is much harder to detect in students than other drugs. It’s difficult to know how much and what is being abused.

-MRHS AlcoholEdu results from the 2014-2015 school year—Highlights of the data are as follows: (AlcoholEdu was administered in Nov. 2014 and April 2015 with 162 students participating)

o38% of your students have never had a drink of alcohol (vs. 47% in ‘14). Among those who have, 37%

have had a drink within the last 2 weeks (up from 31% last year).

oMarijuana use by your students is 17% (up from 10% in 2014) vs. the national average of 8.3% (9.8 in

‘14).

oAmong students who drink, 10% were age 12 or younger when they first started drinking, putting them at risk for developing a problem with alcohol.

oMountain Ridge High students are most commonly obtaining alcohol from a friend (38%) or someone in their family who is over 21 (21%).

oWhile a majority of students who drink did not experience negative consequences as a result of their drinking, 73% report having a hangover and 42% report forgetting where they were or what they did.

oMountain Ridge High students reported that some of the most important reasons not to drink are because they don’t have to drink to have a good time (54%) and that they have other things to do (53%)

oAfter completing AlcoholEdu for High School, 79% reported that the course was helpful in guiding them to make healthy decisions about alcohol.

oThe mean test score increased 53% between the Pre-Test (51%) and Final Exam (78%).

-MD-College Alcohol Survey results from spring 2015 at FSU—Jeff provided each member with a copy of the data

and highlighted interesting key points throughout the report. Some key points are as follows:

oSenior FSU students report drinking at very high risk levels more so than any under classman.

oMarijuana users also tend to be high-or very high-risk drinkers.

oThe more marijuana and alcohol the student uses the lower their GPA.

-EOY Report for DFC submission—April, Ashton, and Lyndsey worked on the report for DFC

year one—October 1, 2014-September 30, 2015.
