Course Syllabus: 2017-2018
I. General Information:

Materials: Notebook with dividers, pen/pencil, colored pencils, glue sticks, index cards, and blank or line paper.
II. Course Description:
The major emphasis of this course is to basic speaking, listening and comprehension skills. French 2 is considered second year French according to the California World Language Content Standards. This course is to impart necessary basic skills for French speaking, listening and comprehension. The core emphasis of French 2 is to, primarily, provide second year French learners the ability to comprehend and produce formularized advance language skills such as basic to advance words, sentences and paragraphs using daily life setting. French 2 students should be expected to develop writing and speaking skills according to the California Content Standards for Intermediate level French requirements. Furthermore, students are expected to perform presentation and writing supported by cultural reading excerpts from various French speaking countries. Students will learn through a variety of educational strategies, including reading, listening, various group activities, demonstrations, audio/visuals, and class projects.
III. Grading Procedures and Regulations:
Marking policy: The student’s course grade will be based on standard percentage calculation. All classwork, tests, homework, warm ups, quizzes, active class participation and class projects will be included. In French 2, it is required to speak in the target language.

Grading scale: A: 90-100%; B: 80-89%; C: 70-79%; D: 60-69%; F: below 60%.
Online grades: You can access your grades online at SCHOOLOGY. Log in information will be given to students the first week of school. Parents are strongly encouraged to obtain the user name and password from their child in order to monitor their grades and assignments daily.
Homework: No unexcused late work will be accepted! Students returning from an absence will have up to TWO DAYS to turn in any outstanding work without penalty. Upon returning to school, students are responsible for determining what work they may have missed as a result of their absence. I will not take up class time to tell you which assignment you have missed. See me during nutrition or after school. Expect to make up tests and quizzes outside of class time. Students are responsible for contacting me to arrange make-ups. No make-up will be allowed for truancies!
Academic dishonesty: Any student found cheating in this class will receive a zero grade and, if necessary, disciplinary action. Copying or sharing information on homework, classwork, or tests is considered cheating. During tests, the person providing the information (knowingly or not) as well as the cheater will receive a zero grade.
IV. Assessment Activities:
Tests: A written test or quiz will be given every other week on the subject covered. In addition, there will be a final class project.
Classwork: All assignments should include the following at the time they are turned in:
Your name, class period, date of activity, and title printed on the top left corner of the page. All classwork and must be complete to receive full credit.
Homework: Homework is assigned weekly and is due either during the week or on the last day of the week.
Activities:
This class is taught in French. The reading excerpts will relate to the Francophone countries around the world. During each unit of study, students are exposed to a variety of grammar concepts, new and review vocabulary, readings and listening activities. Students will be exposed to French Newspaper, French magazines, French TV, French Ads. While the listening part is done in class, there are various assignments that students are expected to complete at home. Grammar, vocabulary, and verb conjugations are practiced both as homework and in class. Students are expected to come to class ready to do work speak and discuss in the target language. Lastly, Reading out loud and paragraph dictation will be an integral part of your assignments.
VI. Citizenship and Discipline:
The student’s citizenship grade will be determined by classroom behavior. The following behaviors will adversely impact a student’s citizenship grade:
o Interfering with the education of others;
o Excessive absences and tardiness;
o Requiring repeated reminders to follow class rules.
VII. General Classroom Rules
1. Arrive on time ready to work.
2. Do all assignments!
3. No eating, chewing gum or drinking is allowed in the classroom.
4. Leave all disturbing items home. Cell phones must be turned off and put away during class time (including texting, IPOD, CD Players and other electronic materials will be forbidden).
5. Adhere to the dress code of King/Drew Magnet High School.
6. Remain seated at the end of class until the teacher excuses you.
7. You are not allowed to walk around without permission
7. Cheating will not be tolerated!
8. Respect and be polite to other people:
- Never interrupt anyone at anytime;
- Never curse, use profanity, or tease other students;
- Always recognize others for a job well done.
Any behavior that the teacher deems unacceptable will result in a private discussion with the student; then, if necessary, a parent or guardian will be notified. If the behavior continues, disciplinary action will follow in accordance with the school's discipline policy.
Serious offenses will be referred to the Dean.

Also, during the school year, students will be engaged in various types of interesting hands-on activities. The student’s participation and cooperation is highly recommended. Furthermore, Pictures will be taken or activities will be recorded for use in the classroom as well as sharing within the school. Parents’ approval is required before students’ pictures can be taken.
