Tolerance - Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. Tolerance is harmony in difference.

We view tolerance as a way of thinking and feeling * but most importantly, of acting * that gives us peace in our individuality, respect for those unlike us, the wisdom to discern humane values and the courage to act upon them.

1st Grade definition: Tolerance is understanding other people’s feelings and differences. While learning how to respect them.

Procedures:

Intro Activity: Quiet as a mouse game

Explain to kids: Ask if they know how to play the game and then reestablish the rules: While reading a book or story, students close their mouths and open their ears to the speaker. Then tell them you are going to pick the quietest *Mouse* at the end of the story. Reward student who was picked after the story has been read.

Activity 2 *The Baby Mustang* (like The Ugly Ducklingstory)

The idea of the story is to show how the mustang is different when he was younger as he grows up to be a Mustang-famous mascot of KMHS. Just because all things are different doesn’t mean they are ugly.

Activity 3: Pass out mustang pictures to color. Tell each student to color the horse however they want. Then when the class is done. Go around the classroom and point out that each one is different from the other -all are beautiful!!

Once upon a time there was a mommy and daddy mustang, which had a baby foal. They loved him very much. It was summer and the hills were alive with color and new life. Birds soared through the air high in the sky. And a gentle breeze swept through the tall grasses surrounding the herd of horses.

As the baby foal began to get stronger, he tried to play with the other horses. Though, they only made fun of him. They called him names and said he was too little to play with them. The baby foal didn’t understand why no one wanted to play with him. He was very hurt by the name-calling and meanness of the other herd members.

Baby Mustang wished that he would fit in with all the other horses. He only wanted to be friends. So he decided to do something about it. He would go to the far side of the plains and practice jumping and galloping. He would do this every day until he had his talents down pat.

Throughout the years, the baby foal continued to grow and gain strength. One day the little horse decided he was ready to face the other members of his herd. He bravely trotted right up to them and the other horses were amazed.

“Look at baby”, one declared. Only the surrounding horses realized that the once little foal was not so small anymore. He had blossomed into a handsome and strong mustang. A nearby cowboy saw the amazing mustang and was so impressed that he decided to make him the proud and famous mascot of KennesawMountainHigh School.
