YEAR 8 ENGLISH REVISED PROGRAMME OF STUDY

2014-2015

KS3 PROGRAMME OF STUDY (See English Department area for the complete revised National Curriculum document, including a non-statutory Glossary)

Reading: - Pupils to read independently for challenge, interest and enjoyment

- Read a range of fiction and non-fiction, including whole books, short

stories, poems and plays

- At least two authors should be studied in depth

- Read a Shakespeare play

- Read world literature

- Understand how language, vocabulary, grammar, structure and organisation

present meaning

- Understand purpose and audience

- Explore setting, plot and characterisation

Writing: -Pupils to write accurately, fluently and at length

- Write for a range of purposes and audiences

- Apply their growing knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and text structure

to their writing

- Plan, draft, edit and proof-read writing

Grammar and Vocabulary: - Pupils to consolidate and build on their knowledge,

understanding and use of grammar and vocabulary

- Understand the difference between spoken and written

language

- Use Standard English confidently in their own writing and

speech

Speaking and Listening: -Pupils to speak confidently and effectively

- Give short speeches and presentations

- Participate in formal debates

- Improvise, rehearse and perform play scripts and poetry

AFs should be incorporated into lesson planning and Pupil Record Sheets must be maintained

Supporting resources should ideally incorporate Power Points / Flipcharts / visual learning / worksheets / key words

YEAR 8 – REVISED PROGRAMME OF STUDY

Teachers should select texts and devise tasks that are challenging for their pupils. Pupils can approach Level Assessed Tasks as stand-alone pieces or as part of a scheme of work. Teachers should prepare their pupils for the task but pieces should not be drafted prior to the assessment lesson. Reading and writing tasks should be assessed under exam conditions during one lesson. Planning sheets can be used.
