Writing Workshop & Literacy

We are taking a break with small moment stories and stared a new unit, “Writing Pattern Books.” and have been practicing writing about a certain topic, such as favorite place, people you like, or things you like to do. This unit is about using patterns to help children write small books that hold big meaning. Some of lessons for this unit include:

  • Use sight words
  • Sentences repeat
  • Have 1,2, or 3 words that change on each page
  • Pictures have meaning
  • The ending can change

For this unit we will use lots of shared reading and read aloud times for the writing lessons. As an introduction I read Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See?, and we talked about the patterns in the story. Then we brainstormed some possible ideas and patterns for our pattern books, such as “I like ______.” “We can make ______.” The children are excited about this unit of writing. The published pattern books will be sent home in thebook bag to read with the family.

Last week, I introduced, Super Star Letters, short vowels. Vowels are Super Stars because if we don’t have vowels, we couldn’t make any words. The Super Stars are a - The Apple, e – Ed, i –Basketball Player, o – Cute Baby, u – The Toddler.

Math

During Math Centers we have been emphasizing the concepts of more and less and measurement with various toolsincludingour feet. The children found different things to measure in the classroom, such as books and table using links and Unifix cubes. We are also continuing to work with counting and number stories.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. & Peace

In class we read a few stories about Martin Luther King Jr. and had discussions about fairness and peace. Then we talked about some things we can do to make the world a better place, such as sharing, using words to solve problems, and being a nice friend. This discussion inspired us to make a new class book called I Have a Dream. We also learned a song about peace.
