Randall County 4-H Members Win Big at State 4-H Roundup Contest

LUBBOCK, TX, 6/11/12 – Texas 4-H Roundup, the annual state 4-H contest, was held last week in Lubbock, TX at Texas Tech University. State 4-H Roundup has happened annually since 1946 and this is the first time the event has taken place outside of College Station, Texas. Contests in the areas of science, engineering & technology, agriculture & natural resources, clothing & textiles, nutrition & health, public speaking, art, and shooting sports are offered. Members compete at the county and district levels during the year in their chosen contest to qualify for these contests.

At the beginning of the week, 220 members from across the state were honored at the Texas 4-H Foundation Scholarship Ceremony. Over two million dollars in scholarship awards were awarded through the foundation this year. Senior members are encouraged to apply for the scholarship program; from the applications received, applicants are selected to travel to Austin to interview. Three members from Randall County 4-H applied, interviewed, and were selected to receive scholarships. Sarah McCarty received the San Antonio Livestock Exposition Scholarship for $16,000 as well as the San Antonio Livestock Exposition Rural Youth Award Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Logan Pluhar and Jordan Vogel were both selected to receive the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship in the amount of $16,000. The total amount of scholarship dollars awarded to Randall County 4-H members in 2012 was $49,000.

On Wednesday, the Salute to Excellence Banquet was held. At this banquet, volunteers and faculty are recognized for their hard work and dedication to the 4-H program across the state. Volunteers are nominated from all 254 counties and out of five award categories, Randall County had a recipient in four. In the Salute to Excellence category, two volunteers from the Panhandle were chosen and Tricia Odom of Happy was recognized. In the Citation for Outstanding Service to Texas4-H category, two awards are given statewide, and Tim Butler of KGNC was recognized. In the Texas 4-H Alumni Award category, two awards are given statewide, and Dean Hawkins, Department Head of Agricultural Sciences at West Texas A&M University, was chosen. Lastly in the Leader’s Legacy Award category, two are given statewide, and Jenny Pluhar of Canyon was recognized.

Members competing in the State Qualifying Livestock Judging Contest were Kellie Baxter who placed 4th high in sheep and goats, Quay Owen who placed 8th high in swine, Tyler Nelson, and McKalah Robinson. The team placed 5th high in sheep and goats. Those competing in the Invitational Livestock Judging Contest were Molly Hutcherson, Makayla Reynolds who placed 9th high in cattle, Callie Hawkins who placed 7th high in swine, Hannah Hawkins, Landon Peterson, Lauren Rogers-Biggs, and Sarah Winters. Coleman Curry competed in the Swine Skill-a-Thon Contest. Mackenzie Odom, Cheraye Aguirre, John Paul Hernandez, and Casey Rust competed in the Consumer Decision Making Contest. The team was 12th high overall.Mackenzie Odom also competed in the Food Show.Members competing in the Rifle Contest were Emily Karcher, Audrey Martin, Andrew Martin, and Samantha Ferguson. Craig Odom competed in the Healthy Lifestyles Invitational Contest. Rachel Smith competed in the Share the Fun – Vocal category. The Randall County Horse Judging Team competed with members Lauren Moore who placed 7th high in performance, 8th high in reasons, and 6th overall, Sparklyn Rust who placed 8th high in reasons, Chaylee Gilmore, and Taylor Williams. The Randall County Horse Judging Team placed 2nd high overall, 4th in halter, 5th in performance, and 3rd in reasons. This team has been invited to compete at the National 4-H Horse Judging Contest. Jordan Vogel competed in the Public Speaking Contest. Members who competed in educational demonstrations were Abby McCarty who placed 1st in the Companion Animals Category, the team of Sarah McCarty, Taylor Williams, Sheridan Artho who placed 1st in the Open Category, Arianne Cox, and Cheraye Aguirre. Members who competed in Fashion Show were Thea Coffman and Rachel Smith who placed 1st in the Fashion Show with her garment in the Natural Fibers – Cotton Category. Rachel Smith also competed in the Fashion Storyboard Contest where she placed 3rd. Sarah McCarty, Abby McCarty and Sheridan Artho competed in the Photography Contest where Sarah won Best of Show with her photo storyboard.

Randall County made an impressive showing at the 2012 Texas 4-H Roundup and the staff at the Randall County Extension Office are very proud of their efforts.
