Section B: Our School
  1. To help you understand our school business better, we will briefly describe our school (e.g. age of the students; location; environment).
KIIT World School is located in Delhi with 1500 students between age group of 10 to 18 years (Grade 6 to 12) coming from diverse social and religious background.
The school is located in Urban Delhi. The school believes in equality in education for all and hence it endeavours to bring World Education to the doorsteps of every citizen of India despite their challenging, economic and educational background. However with their limited resources they contribute with passion and commitment.
We have a vision of creating a community of connected, confident, Indian global citizens. Our goal is to motivate children to learn ‘how to learn’ with passion and curiosity. We want students to gain an impetus for lifelong learning and become educated and informed leaders of the future who will collaborate, work and create to improve the quality of life.
We aim to nurture not just better adjusted achievers, not just better conformers, but young men and women who can strike a new trail, who can redefine notions of success and who can take open hearts and minds out into the society which they can help transform.
Student leadership programmes are a regular feature of the school where tender minds are provided with the opportunities to hone skills like collaboration, innovative and original thinking and time management through various simple activities. Such programmes help in reinforcing the coherence of ideas and skills that are requisite of a successful leader. Similarly, developing scientific temperament at school level is very important. A lot of stress is given on ‘learning by doing’ where the students are free to experiment, explore and innovate. Developing socially responsible learners who reach out to community and share resources is what KIIT takes pride in. We have ‘Care and Share’ programme in our school where students learn to look beyond self and extend a helping hand to the underprivileged section of society. Every year Interact Club students undertake various community outreach programmes with a lot of vigor and gusto. We firmly believe in imparting the values of empathy and love for all living beings.
Section C: Our School Business Experience
  1. Here is a brief description of the school business we ran before/are currently running, including the products/services we sold/are selling.
We are already having KIIT NUTRICAFE business running at our school in which students make variety of yummy and nutritious snacks for catering the requirements of the students of the school. All items are made out of healthy ingredients and are prepared in a hygienic manner within the school premises by the team of students themselves. We offer a platter of attractive and tasty food which includes vegetable patties, whole wheat burgers, vegetable rolls and variety of sandwiches along with health drinks and shakes.
The only cost involved in our project is the cost of the ingredients i.e. the vegetables, fruits, sauces, bakery items etc which we use in our nutricafe on an everyday basis.
This year, we have plans to expand the horizon of our Nutricafe business and take it beyond the boundary of the school. Our plan comprises both the expansion and diversification of our business.
EXPANSION PLAN
We will bring modifications and improvements in our existing menu and add on salads, healthy wraps, ice-cream ,cakes and pastry etc which are very popular among the students.
ADDITION OF SERVICES AND PRODUCTS
We will also introduce the concept of ‘class delivery’and ‘meal boxes’ to add on to our customer base. We will add on ‘Bakery Business’ and ‘Chocolate making’ to our existing business for Nutricafe.
PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES
We also will be promoting our business by organizing musical concerts, food café-competitions among classes, 3D Movie shows with refreshments , vegetable market and eco-friendly food festivals - to name a few.
DIVERSIFICATION PLAN
We will diversify into Party planning and Entertainment along with providing the catering facility to these occasions and events.
We have planned that all work will be done by students in their regular House Activity classes and in their Club Periods. So, they will not have to cut down their academic time in school. During the course of this business, they will come to know a lot about Indian and other cuisine and how to prepare the healthy version of the same, since they would be making the food items with nutrition and hygiene as the prime factors of focus. There is no harm to environment by doing this business and it will ultimately lead to students having more awareness about nutritious eating and staying healthy.
The expansion and diversification plan will help the students to enhance their business management skills and boost up their confidence to take more pressure sportingly and to be more creative ,productive and business oriented.
Section D: Our Resources
  1. Considering our school’s physical resources, skills and location, these are the resources available at our school we can use to develop our business:
The idea of this business is to promote culinary skills and business management skills among the students and to take out their creativity with respect to making innovative dishes and shakes and healthy version of chocolates and natural ice-creams. The lead teacher and supporting teachers at Nutricafe and other creative teachers will guide students to develop many new and attractive healthy dishes in the café to be offered to the students during the lunch break and during the dispersal time to quench their thirst and hunger.
RESOURCES REQUIRED FOR EXPANSION AND ADDING SERVICES

A group of students were trained during a workshop to make Chocolates and few of our students know how to make variety of tempting easy biscuit and fruits cakes (easily made in the microwave or oven). We will form a team of students and they will look after the preparation of cakes to meet the requirement of the students and their family and friends for their birthdays, for festivals and other occasions. Gift baskets of chocolates can be sold during the festive season and can be supplied to the nearby shops for sale.
Organising musical concerts, food café-competitions among classes, 3D Movie shows
We have excellent singers in the school and few of our students have formed a band also who will be a part of the party planning and entertainment business. This will not only help grooming their vocal skills but will also teach them accountability, market research, planning and time management plus earning them good revenue.
We have two microwave ovens and three big refrigerators to support us for the ‘Bakery Business’ in the school premises. We have easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables as the Azadpur market which is the wholesale market for vegetables and fruits, is in the near vicinity. The access to the wholesale market will also enable us to arrange for a ‘Vegetable Market’ just outside the school premises for the Parents on some specific days. We also have close access to the wholesale market for groceries i.e. Naharpur Market from where we will be purchasing the other things required for our business.
We are also having a kitchen garden in the school from where we can get some very healthy ingredients for our nutricafe business.
Section E: Brainstorming Business Ideas
  1. a) These are the five business ideas we thought of when brainstorming a new idea or a way of diversifying or growing the existing one:

  • Bakery Business - Cake and Chocolate Making

  • Hobby Classes
b) The business we chose for our Silver Award is: Adding Bakery Business and Event Planning and Entertainment
And these are 3 reasons why we chose these ideas:
After doing lot of brainstorming and feasibility study, we selected this idea as this venture is best suited in terms of the resources, time, skills and space available to us.
Reason 1: Minimal Investment (Low StartUp Cost)
Since most of the raw material required for our products will be easily available from school and the nearby markets, we will not have to spend much on buying. We will get required materials from wholesale market which offers huge discounts for schools. Some food items require water which we intend to use by collecting it from by-product of RO systems installed in our school.
The second important factor is to obtain skilled people to make products which again comes with price tag. We are cutting on that cost completely as we will be using our own pool of skilled students, teachers and parents.
Also for our Event Planning and Entertainment Business, we have our own talented artists and entertainers who will be working on planning the events, organizing them and executing them. We have established Alumni who have formed their Musical Bands. We have spoken to them who have agreed to be a part of our performing teams. The instruments will be taken from the Music Department of school.
Reason 2: Profitable Business
Since investment is low, and food items are economically priced enough to cover the cost, so we have selected this business. Moreover, the India especially Delhi is a place where people love to party and enjoy food , so we have added on the new verticals of Bakery Business and Event planning and Entertainment to our existing business. This will not only help grooming their vocal skills but will also teach them accountability, market research, planning and time management plus earning them good revenue.
Reason 3: Access to necessary material
We will use easily available local food resources/staple food for making our eatables . We will use the packaging which is biodegradable and not harmful. We will use the talent of our students only to expand as well as diversify the existing business. Now apart from “ Product Based Business”, we will also focus on “Service based Business” which will add to the quality of the revenue generated by us and will definitely take us to new heights.
Reason 4: Time Factor
We intend to utilize our regular House Activity classes and Club Periods as a year-long structured programme. Students will not miss their regular academic classes which becomes a major hindrance in success of any school run business.
KIIT has classes from VI – X and there are 40 students per section of class on an average making a total of 1000 students. Classes XI and XII only do club activities only. So, we calculate that 1000 students working for two hours per week can produce a good amount of stock to be supplied and consumed on a regular basis. We have identified that not all are good in cooking and not all are good in presentation so they can work to provide basic support of packing,cutting/chopping and buying the ingredients. 400 students will be involved directly in the business and others will support them in production, advertising, marketing and accounting.

People:
The business of Nutricafe and Event Management & Entertainment will generates Employment for local vegetable vendors and housewives.It will give an opportunity to the housewives who have excellent culinary skills and make mouth watering dishes to get a platform to show their talent to a bigger lot of audience who can also get the flavour of the nutritious and tempting recipes they have been trying at home.It will also enhance their creativity ,presentation and make them more confident when it comes to facing the outside world.The local vegetable vendors will get a permanent set of customers in us. So they will have the assurance of a regular sale.And at the same time,we could bargain with them to get the required vegetables and fruits at the most competitive prices.
At the same time the business is going to upskill students and makes them aware of the Indian food preferences and interest of the people and expectations of the Indian society when it comes to organising their events ,functions and providing them with a medium of entertainment.It will make them more confident when it comes to organizing functions.At the same time,itwill inculcate in them team management , coordination,mutualunderstanding,financial management and presentation skills.Such skills will not only help them in handling the business efficiently and effectively but at the same time will groom them to become global citizens which has always been the vision of KIIT World School.
Last but the least,such a business is always going to think about the students of KIIT School as well as all the outside customers to whom we will be selling our goodies.With a motto of providing healthy food which is both tasty and nutritious ,we will be having a social motive of caring for the younger generation of ours,who are the future of our country.By looking after their food requirements in a healthy way,we are being sensitive enough to understand that how important is healthy eating for a sound mind and a sound body.We want our students to switch over from the unhealthy eating habits and understand the value of nutrition in life which is for sure going to help them in the long run.
We have planned to start a School Enterprise Challenge Club(SEC CLUB) at KIIT WORLD SCHOOL which will offer three types of Memberships to its members, Platinum,Gold and Silver at Rs.300,Rs.200 and Rs.100 respectively.The membership will entitle the members to some special benefits for the purchases and offers at Nutricafe and JoyStage.The membership fees generated will be a the source of initial funding for our business We will motivate our students as well as their parents and other people from neighbourhood and the society to raise funds for business.Apart from looking after the financial needs for the business the SEC CLUB will also discharge the social responsibility aspect for the business.It will focus on the welfare of students, parents (by arranging free trainings for them), and society by making visits to old people living in old age homes, organising blood donation camps, Free eye testing camps, dental check-ups and Cancer detection camps.Along with “Profit Maximisation” another main objective of the Club is “Giving it back to society”. And the action plan designed for this SEC CLUB will promote Empathy and Responsibility in hearts of students and love, respect and peace in society.
As a promotional activity for our business,the leftover food for the nutricafe will be distributed on an everyday basis, in the nearby GB-Block slum areas in Pitampura.Also,once in a month, we will also conduct certain activities where one day profit we will be donating for buying books,clothes or any other required necessities for the underprivileged,thereby making our students understand the value of “the role of discharging social responsibility” for the existence of a business enterprise.
Profit:
We understand quite well the role of profit in a business and that profits every year should improve and grow then only the business is sustainable.
This year we have growth and expansion as well as diversification plans for our business which will require an increased cost of investment from our end.Hence, in order to be able to make our business plans a success, our primary focus this year will be to ensure the stability of the profits and at the same time to see that our efforts direct the new businesses to reap profits from the first year itself.
Since the Nutricafe Business will focus on doing all the preparations in house, within our own school premises and we will be buying the raw material only from the local vendors and wholesale markets, the profit margins are expected to be high.
