SPEAKER AND RESOURCE PERSON’S PROFILE

Mr. Aftab A. QURESHI, Senior ED Advisor, World Bank Board, The World Bank served as Senior Advisor to Executive Director for Pakistan and 6 other countries at the World Bank.

Prior to his World Bank experience, he was connected with the Asian Development fromJune 1988-May 1991, and June 1994-February 2003 in various staff positions in the Development Finance Division; Infrastructure Department; Private Sector Department; Indonesia Resident Mission; and Operations Evaluation Department (OED). Last position held with ADB was Principal Evaluation Specialist, OED. Most of his project and policy dialogue work and all his evaluation work at ADB were focused on the financial sector/capital market development; trade, industry and private sector development; and private sector project finance, infrastructure finance and debt restructuring. His evaluation work at ADB covered, among others: (i) ADB’s Crisis Management Interventions in Indonesia, (ii) Financial Sector Program in Laos, (iii) Industrial Sector Program in Nepal, and (iv) six TA Projects for Capital Market Development in Pakistan. He was a winner of President’s Performance Award for the year 2002.

From June 1991-May 1994, he worked as Vice President/Senior Vice President at the Asian Finance & Investment Corporation (AFIC), the ADB’s equivalent of IFC, on secondment from ADB. His responsibility included all lending and investment operations of AFIC throughout the Asia Pacific region. He also led the review of the Corporation’s operational and provisions policies, and developed the country risk management framework.

From April 1982-March 1983 and May 1985-September 1986 he served as long term consultant of ADB and posted as Advisor to Myanmar Economic Bank (MEB), Yangon, Myanmar.

Some of the organizations he has worked with from 1976 to 1986 include: The Youth Investment Promotion Society (YIPS) Pakistan as Founding Managing Director; National Development Finance Corporation (NDFC) Pakistan in various middle and senior management positions; Pakistan Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation (PICIC), Pakistan as Investment Officer on project appraisal and supervision; and the Department of Business Administration, University of Punjab as Associate Professor responsible for the design of courses on Investment Management and Principles of Management.

His previous association with ADFIAP included his paper presentations on, “Innovative Approaches to Business Promotion and Development” at the ADFIAP Annual Meeting in New Delhi, 1984 and “Innovative Financing Sources/Bond Market Development” at the ADFIAP Annual Meeting in Karachi, 1994.

Mr. Qureshi obtained his Bachelor of Commerce Honors, Hailey College of Commerce, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan in 1967 and his MBA with Finance Major at the Institute of Business Administration, KarachiUniversity, Karachi, Pakistan in 1969.
