Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to this week’s Education Essex.
I hope you were able to get a break at half term. We are looking forward to the events this and next week with primary headteachers, where we will be looking particularly at support for school leaders and also making use of all the available performance data.
Thank you to school colleagues who helped test the new platform for Essex Schools Infolink before half term. An update on the latest improvements is included under What’s New on Essex Schools Infolink.

Have a good week,

Updates to Key Stage 1 and phonics data since unvalidated data release
The 2013 Key Stage 1 and phonics interactive and summary reports on RAISEonline will not be updated with final datasets this year as there were only a small number of amendments. Raise have directly contacted the schools that had changes to school level data and provided guidance as to how they can update their data through the school’s own function.Inspectors have been advised about this decision and provided with details of the schools affected.
Provisional Release timelines for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 4 validated datasets:
  • Key Stage 2 interactive reports – Friday 28 February 2014
  • Key Stage 2 summary reports – by Tuesday 4 March 2014
  • Key Stage 4 validated data – by beginning of April 2014 (exact date will be confirmed in week before)
These datasets will reflect the outcome of requests for changes that schools may have submitted during the autumn schools performance tables’ checking period. The validated datasets will also include data received from awarding organisations relating to late-notified results or re-marks, but may not reflect the outcome of all late results, on-going appeals or of late-resolved maladministration cases.

Funding for One-to-one tuition 2014/15
Headteacher/ Tuition Lead
InfantJuniorPrimarySecondary
All
The One-to-One Tuition Team, Essex Education Services, are pleased to inform schools that the level of funding available within school budgets to support One-to-One tuition as a key intervention will remain as in 2013/14.We have been advised that this funding will remain in the AWPU allocation that schools and academies receive and will be calculated from the number of pupils on roll. Maintained schools should be notified of their budget share by Friday 28 February 2013 and academies will receive their funding in their 2014/15 statement.
This year, we strongly recommend funding is used for one-to-one tuition as this is an intervention which has significant impact on the progress and attainment of under-performing pupils.
Free support in how best to use this funding is available:

Future Scholar Awards

All
The Department for Education (DfE) have announced The Future Scholar Awards which aims to help schools raise the aspirations of their high achieving pupils. New for 2014 they are keen to include those pupils who have the potential to attend a top university, but may not consider doing so.This may be pupils without someone who has been to university in their family; those from lower income backgrounds, those entitled to the pupil premium, those in care, and those in other disadvantaged circumstances.
Although no high value in terms of funding (DfE will cover travel and supply teaching costs etc) it is worth highlighting as this links directly with Essex County Council’s priorities of raising aspirations and attainment. Each school can nominate five year 9 pupils.

National Citizen Service (NCS),delivered by the Essex Youth Service and Essex Boys and Girls Clubs, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that helps young people build skills for work and life, while taking on new challenges and making new friends, and would like to ensure that every eligible young person in Essex has the opportunity to take part in this programme.
Year 11 and 12 students and 16 and 17 year olds not in education can develop the tools and belief to unlock their potential and make a positive impact in their communities.NCS will give hundreds of young people across Essex the chance to:
  • Meet other young people from all backgrounds and tackle outdoor challenges on an exciting residential week away from home.
  • Join with local businesses and social leaders to learn new skills for work and life and discover more about their area.
  • Make their mark by developing and delivering local community volunteering projects that matter to them.
NCS takes place over several weeks (out of school time) in spring, summer or autumn. A focus on social mixing, regular guided reflection and social action projects led by young people makes NCS a unique and fulfilling experience.
To book an assembly or arrange a meeting to discuss how the NCS can make a positive impact on young people in your school:

The Work Experience Team are a specialist team of work experience team leaders who source placements for every individual young person. They match up individual’s interests and needs to find the most suitable work placement, offering a more hands-on approach leading to successful work placements overall.
As youth service staff, we have mainly focussed on those young people on Alternative Education and Prince’s Trust programmes. However, we have a vision to expand in the future and involve schools. As part of Essex County Council, the Work Experience Team allows employers and businesses to be part of the community helping young people across Essex.

Supported by Northamptonshire SACRE and Northamtonshire Gurdwaras, Sikh Education Service has visited schools, hosted school visits at Gurdwaras and offered teacher training workshops, which has now extended into requests from other counties, and schools and teachers now taking advantage of this service throughout the UK.
Being a non-profit making organisation, the suggested contribution for attending schools for a half day commitment, or a full day commitment will be affordable and suitable to most budgets, and the service is happy to discuss this with each individual school, or groups of schools wishing to book workshops and assemblies.
Please see feedbackregarding previous support the service have offered.

Changes to the school organisation system
New school organisation regulations, and academy processes, to allow schools to make changes to their size and characteristics came into force on Tuesday 28 January 2014. The changes:
  • Allow schools to make certain changes (enlargement of premises, altering age range, and adding boarding provision) without following a statutory process
  • The statutory processes have been slimmed down for certain other changes to maintained schools (e.g. a single-sex school becoming co-educational) by reducing the length of the process and the level of prescription
  • The requirement for academies to submit a formal business case to the department to make similar changes has been removed.
Spring term 2014 - information for heads and governors
Important information to help headteachers, principals and governors plan ahead, prepare for, and implement changes during the academic year and beyond.
It contains links to:
  • The Need to Know Timelines - of when mandatory requirements come into force
  • Useful information for schools to know
  • Myths and facts document which clarifies misconception that can circulate about the things schools need to do or have in place.
