Kerala Forest Development Corporation proposes to engage consultant for orchid gardening in connection with the proposed Orchidarium project at Vagamon in idukki District.
Kerala Forest Development Corporation has been identified as the nodal agency for eco tourism in the state. KFDC is entrusted with the task of establishing an orchidarium and floriculture centre at Vagamon as part of the one year action plan 2011-12. It is proposed to develop Vagmon in to a destination for environmental education and conservation. The centre is to serve as a conservatory for wild and domestic orchids and ferns of the Western Ghats. The project is designed to provide an interaction space for enthusiasts of floriculture and high altitude forestry and to act as demonstration unit for commercial production and sale of plants and cut flowers.
The project is proposed to be implemented in two phases over an extent of 15.2 ha. Out of this, the works in 5.9 ha. had been progressing well in 1st pahse .
Persons having expertise in cultivation and marketing of the orchids and who are proficient in various techniques of developing micro environment for such plants and have wide travel experience in the related geographical regions are proposed to be engaged as consultant fir this purpose.
The scope of the consultancy includes,
1. Assisting the collection and identification of wild orchids in the Western Ghats
2. Developing layout plan for introducing the orchids, ferns and other plant in orchidarium area.
3. Providing practical suggestions in maintaining, cultivating and propagating those plants for the project
4. Developing innovative ideas for presentation and labeling of wild and cultivated orchids
5. Assisting in developing micro propagation protocols for wild and cultivated orchids.
6. Developing computer assisted display of orchids with educative inputs.
7. Training the staff and laborers in the orchid nurturing, propagation etc, ,
8. Advising on the commercial aspects of the project including procurement, sales and other marketing activities related.
9. Developing models for involving communities in the orchid cultivation for livelihood improvement.
Travel arrangements are to be made by the consultant. Fee for consultancy will be negotiable and will be finalized based on number of visits, perdiem rate etc.
