Background:
OV started to work with a new programme 3 months after sending the first volunteer. This has created an exciting new structure for the new Kenya Masai project with a more pro-active engagement with the local community and greater income for the host families. We also took into consideration the seasonal nature of the volunteer sector and low number of volunteers travelling to Kenya in certain months of the year so we have decided to support some families all year around regardless of them hosting volunteers. This should bring some stability for these vulnerable families all year around.
All volunteers who booked the Kenya project and were added to the Kenya project list before the 6th May 2011 can travel with the old price of the £40 per week, providing they have made a commitment with flight details according to the update they have been sent already
Ongoing projects (updates from the Coordinator):
1. Teaching in primary school
You can bring: writing pads, playing kits, novels, pencils, pens, chalk board, drawing pads and any other material necessary for teaching.
2. Feeding program
Food security is the only way to reduce hanger in Masailand. A volunteer can donate £40 towards the introduction of agriculture. We want to introduce irrigation as a long lasting solution in Masailand.
3. School projects
Building/ painting classrooms and fencing; volunteers can also donate £40 to get involved in these projects.
4. Medical project – only for medical students and professionals.
This includes injecting local people in the dispensary and helping with the general daily running of the dispensary. Volunteers must bring prove of practice certificates or equivalent.
5. Environmental Conservation
Planting trees and flora (only possible in the rainy season). Volunteers can donate around £10 to buy trees.
6. Orphanage project – Starting soon at Olasiti
Volunteers will need to bring gloves and protective wear if they wish to help with this project. Donation of £20 can be made to buy paint and paint brushes.
Original Volunteers do not own or operate the projects but only send volunteers to work with small charitable organisations abroad it is impossible to guarantee that prices on the website will remain the same throughout your year of travel. Especially when booking more than 12 months in advance, these can change at short notice according to the needs of the organisation or local inflation which makes it impossible to cover rising costs of rent and bills. Most projects try to keep the same volunteer contributions for at least a couple of years. When prices do go up these do not generally go up more than £25 per week. If there is a price change we notify the change by email to everyone on the list for that particular project including those who have only expressed an interest.
