FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

KENNY ROBERTS WINS

THE 2010 JUSTICE BROTHERS-

SHAV GLICK AWARD

Duarte, CA: The coveted Justice Brothers-Shav Glick award for 2010 has been won by motorcycle racing legend Kenny Roberts. Roberts was born in 1951, and took to motorcycle racing at an early age. By the early Seventies, because of his fearless racing style he was a consistent winner, and was the first American to win the 500cc Road Racing World Championship. He continued his career victories by winning two AMA Grand National Championships in 1973 and ’74, three consecutive 500cc National Championships in 1978, ’79 and 1980, and three victories at the Daytona 200. Roberts’ fierce competition with Brit Barry Sheene during the 1979 British Grand Prix, is considered one of the greatest races of the decade.

Kenny Roberts was also an innovator during his career. He was the first racer to use an outstretched knee to help balance the bike during hard cornering and to use the engine’s power to steer the motorcycle while exiting turns. This became known as the “throttle steering” technique. Due to his illustrious career, Roberts has been inducted into the Motorsports Hall Of Fame in 1990, the International Motorsports Hall Of Fame in 1992, the AMA Motorcycle Hall Of Fame in 1998, and the FIM has named him Grand Prix “Legend” in 2000.

Kenny Roberts ran his last race during the 1983 season, winning the San Marino Grand Prix. His son Kurtis Roberts carries on the legacy riding for Team Roberts today.

After finishing his racing career, Roberts became a safety advocate, initiating safety measures at racing venues. Until that time rider safety was not a consideration by the tracks, so Roberts worked hard to successfully change that. In 1983 he also turned to team management, which he still does today.

After careful deliberation, Kenny Rogers has been selected by a judging panel that includes National and California motorsports writers, to receive the prestigious Justice Brothers-Shav Glick Award. The award, now in it’s 11th year, was presented by Ed Justice, Jr. during the pre-race ceremonies at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Auto Club 500, in Fontana, California.
