Lined Shopping Bag

Fabric:

½ yard or two fat quarters for outside.

½ yard or two fat quarters for lining

Scraps of batting

Cardboard or foam core for bottom (optional)

  1. With right sides together, cut two pieces of outer fabric and two pieces

of lining fabric 18x20 inches

  1. Lay the bag so that the 18 inch side forms the bottom of the bag and the

20 inch sides are the sides of the bag. Measure and cut 3 inch squares

out of both sides of the bottom of the bag. (See illustration)

Cut the remaining pieces into 4 strips 18”x 2 ½ ”

  1. Place the bag fabric right sides together and sew along one 20 inch side, the

18 inch bottom, and the other 20 inch side. Do not sew around the

corners of the 3 inch square cut outs. Repeat for the lining fabric but

leave a 3 inch opening in one side of the lining (not the bottom).

  1. Pull the sides apart at the bottom and match the seams to form the bottom

on both sides of the bag.Pin and stitch across bottom. Repeat with the

lining fabric.

  1. Make the handles. Cut 2 pieces of batting 2 ½” x 18”. Stack the bag fabric

and lining fabric right sides together and put the batting on top. Sew along

both sides and one end. Trim the seam allowance of the batting to 1/8 in.

Turn with a pencil or stick from the sewn end. Repeat for the other handle.

  1. Find the center of the bag and place a pin there, then put a pin

between the side seam and the center pin on each side of the

center pin. Repeat for the other side of the bag. Pin your handles

downward centering one end of the handle on each pin. Be sure that

there is not a twist in the handles. Baste in place.

  1. Turn the lining wrong side out and turn the bag right side out.

Place the bag with handles inside the lining bag. Pin and stitch the

top of the two bags together matching raw edges. Reinforce the

raw edges of the handles by back stitching over the area as you sew.

  1. Turn the bag through the opening in the lining.
  2. Press the bag along the top edge and topstitch ¼ inch away from the fold all the way around the top of the bag. Be sure the handles are up.
  3. Optional: Cut a piece of foam core or cardboard the same width and length as the bottom of your bag. You can make a sleeve to cover the cardboard by cutting a piece double the width of the cardboard plus ½ inch and 6 inches wider. Sew the long sides together and turn it right side out. Insert the cardboard, then tuck the ends back in on themselves.Flop this into the bag for more support when you are carrying groceries
  4. Yea!!! You are done.
