KBD 1040 – MATERIALS & ESTIMATING

RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT – ONGOING

OBJECTIVE: To give you an opportunity to research various manufacturers and companies that produce kitchen and bath design-related materials and items. This assignment is on-going throughout the course – and also, two-fold:

1)one manufacturer/product that is a standard product;

2)another manufacturer/product that is considered “green” or meets sustainable or environmentally friendly products (could potentially be the same company as many are offering two approaches).

JOB TASK:As we study each category, do your web research and complete as described below. Ultimately, you will be creating a “Resource Directory” for your future use.

PROCEDURE:

1)As we study each main category, research the various web sites that you have been given, plus do any additional searches you want – Google works great!

2)Write a brief one-page (no longer) report on each category: one ‘normal’ product; one ‘green’ product.

  1. Include name of the manufacturer, types of products offered, types of materials used in manufacturing, special features that this company has to offer. Include local dealers for the product(s) or manufacturer and/or local representative for this product(s) and/or manufacturer.
  2. For the ‘green’ category: include same data – name of manufacturer, types of products offered, types of materials used, special features, and what makes the company and/or product ‘green’ or a sustainable choice.

3)Categories include:

  1. Cabinetry – Week 1
  2. Hardware – Week 1
  3. Appliances – Week 2 (can include cool storage, cooking, dishwashers, wine coolers, etc)
  4. Kitchen Sinks – Week 3
  5. Bath Fixtures – Week 3
  6. Fitting Site – kitchen &/or bath – Week 4
  7. Countertop Materials site – Week 5

4)Due the week following the lesson(s) on the topic. Easiest to put in the folder provided in the Dropbox in D2L. When you open KBD 1040, click on the Dropbox link (green bar), the click on the appropriate folder (there will be one for each assignment), it will allow you to browse back in your My Documents on your harddrive (I suggest creating a folder for each class, with folders inside for the various assignments). Just click on the appropriate document – and it will automatically upload to the folder in D2L; it will put it under your name with the date and time submitted.

“Green” products include any that are considered ‘sustainable’, ‘environmentally-friendly’, made of

natural materials, local materials, no chemicals in them, recycled products, made in factories that

practice and promote recycling and environmentally-friendly efforts. As you are doing your searches,

always inquire if the companyhas green practices and what products are considered ‘green’. For

local companies – you may wantto zero in any manufacturing companies near you – those will be

products and resources that youwill probably use personally in your future. For additional date on

green attributes – go to from NKBA:
