Marketplace Survey

I conducted a poll to see how a selection of first-year Duke students felt about the Marketplace and the freshman dining experience. Out of the 26 survey emails I sent out, I received only 16 responses. The first choice for every question read “I have no preferences for the choices listed below this statement.” The first question of the survey asked students to rank their favorite eateries on East Campus. The choices were: Durham Market, Nu Degrees, PI, Pacific Rim, Earth's Fare, Cucina, Stockpots (all featured stations within the Marketplace), Trinity Café, I would prefer to eat on West, I would prefer to buy and cook my own food, and I would prefer to eat at an off campus eatery. “I would prefer to eat on West” was the Condorcet and Plurality winner. The second question discussed students’ desire for additions to the Marketplace menu. The choices were: increased variety of salad bar ingredients, increased variety of hot meal options at each station, increased variety of vegetarian and vegan options, daily fish entrée, soft-serve ice cream, and sushi. “Soft-serve ice cream” was the Plurality and Condorcet winner. Question three explored students’ preferences for enhancing the dining experience as a whole. The choices were: breakfast and dinner meal swipes eligible for use on West Campus eateries, a-la-carte breakfast and dinner, like lunch, paid for with food points (no meal swipes), a “Refectory Station” specializing in Refectory favorites and farm to table dining, reduced price for all breakfast, lunch and dinner options, more made-to-order options at breakfast, lunch and dinner, unused meals carry over until used or end of the semester, higher value for missed breakfast meal equivalency (currently $4), longer hours of operation at the Marketplace, and more detailed online menu. “Breakfast and dinner meal swipes eligible for use on West Campus eateries” was both the Plurality and Condorcet winner.

By the number of “Inf” value entries in the survey results, I can infer that there were a few students who were not clear on the use of the first choice, “I have no preferences for the choices listed below this statement.” With that said, however, there was little ambiguity on the winning choices for each question. When the results spreadsheet is examined, it seems as though the preferences of those who mistakenly left “I have no preference…” at the top of the list would not have significantly affected the overall results. The only inconsistency was within the ranked pairs for the first question. “Cucina” is ranked above “I would prefer to eat at an off campus eatery” while “Cucina” lost to it by 1. “PI” beat “Trinity Café” and “Earth’s Fare” by 2 and 1 respectively, but is ranked below those two choices.

I came to this survey topic out of my own frustration with the first-year dining experience, in the hopes of understanding how my peers felt on the matter. It seems as though most people would like some changes, however I will need to poll a much larger percentage of the class before coming to an accurate conclusion. Though I doubt any freshman would argue if I began to petition for soft-serve ice cream.
