Meeting Expectations for Senators

Aloha Senators,

Welcome to the 2015-2016 Senate! Thank you for representing the voice of your Academic Unit. Together, let’s carry out the purpose of the Senate in a way that is pono, transparent, respectful, and with integrity. Let’s hold one another accountable for our words and actions. This will help to ensure that all voices are heard, our meetings are productive and positive, and the tasks on the agenda are discussed and completed in a timely and effective manner. I humbly ask you to help me, as Faculty Senate Chair, accomplish these at every meeting. As a Senator, please…

  • Be respectful
  • Respect different perspectives
  • Respect the role of the Chair and the Senate
  • Encourage every Senator to share his/her voice
  • Listen attentively
  • Keep your statements concise and relevant to the discussion/topic at hand
  • Be mindful of your sharing time to allow time for others to share
  • Add to the discussion/topic at hand if there is something new to add
  • Allow views to be expressed uninterrupted
  • Minimize interruptions and side conversations
  • Come prepared by reading all documents ahead of time

In addition, according the Constitution (Article III - Organization of the Senate, Section 6), Senators have the following responsibilities:

A. Attend all Senate meetings or provide a substitute.

B. Report Senate actions and information to their Academic Units.

C. Vote on Senate actions representing their Academic Units.

D. Serve on Ad-hoc committees as designated by the Chair.

If a proxy is sent, the proxy must review the agenda and relevant documents prior to the meeting and confers with the Senator on how to vote.

Dissemination of information and communication between Senators and their Academic Units should be timely and transparent. If a matter is to be voted on in a subsequent Faculty Senate meeting, Senators should poll their units at a meeting or via email.

Together, we can enhance and advance our College.

Respectfully,

Veronica F. Ogata
