  1. Call to Order-The meeting was called to order at 8:30a.m. by Bill deDie.
  1. Meeting Minutes of April 6, 2012 - The minutes of the April 6, 2012 meeting were approved as written.
  1. Review/Revise/Approve Agenda- Addition of 9.5 General Education Outcomes.

5.1Board of Trustees Action – None.

5.2Course Inactivations – None.

5.3Program Inactivations – None.

5.4Course Revisions

5.4.1 ELT 238, Voice/Data/Video Systems and Cabling, 3-1-6 (Lecture/Standard Lab) change to 3-1-4 (Lecture/Standard Lab). This is a strategy change to streamline the lab portion of the class. It was MOVED, SECONDED, and CARRIED to support the ELT 238 course revision as stated.

5.5New Courses

5.5.1HRY 260, History of the Middle East, 3-3-0 (Lecture/Discussion) This new course will become a program elective for both the AA degree and Certificate in International Studies. It is the only course offered at KVCC on the Middle East and will transfer to WMU. It was MOVED, SECONDED, and CARRIED to support HRY 260 as a new course offering as stated.

5.5.2SOC 261 Cultures in Latin America, 3-3-0 (Lecture/Discussion) This new course will become a program elective for both the AA degree and Certificate in International Studies. It is the only course offered on Latin America atKVCC. It will articulate to WMU as the equivalent of their ANTH 3390. It was MOVED, SECONDED, and CARRIED to support SOC 261 as a new course offering as stated.

5.6Program Revisions

5.6.1International Studies, AA - HRY 260 and SOC 261 will be added as electives for the AA degree. It was MOVED, SECONDED, and CARRIED to support the addition of HRY 260 and SOC 261 as electives for the International Studies AA degree.

5.6.2International Studies, Certificate - HRY 260 and SOC 261 will be added as electives for the International Studies Certificate degree. It was MOVED, SECONDED, and CARRIED to support the addition of HRY 260 and SOC 261 as electives for the International Studies Certificate program.

5.6.3ANM Studio Art/Studio Management, AAS –The program credits will move from 66 hours to 63 hours to better align with the AAS degree requirements. It was MOVED, SECONDED, and CARRIED to support the revision of the ANM Studio Art/Studio Management, AAS as stated.

5.7New Programs

5.7.1CNC Operator, COA - This COA concentration is being recommended as a stackable completion option for students in MACH. It was MOVED, SECONDED, and CARRIED to support the addition of the CNC Operator, COA as a new program offering.

5.7.2Welding, COA - This COA concentration is being recommended as a stackable completion option for students in WELD. It was MOVED, SECONDED, and CARRIED to support the addition of the Welding, COA as a new program offering.

5.7.3Machine Tool Operator, COA - This COA concentration is being recommended as a stackable completion option for students in MACH. It was MOVED, SECONDED, and CARRIED to support the addition of the Machine Tool Operator, COA as a new program offering.

5.8Department Chairs Committee Role – Postponed. To be further discussed at the May 7, 2012 subcommittee retreat. Recommendations forthcoming.

9.1Textbook Adoption Policies-This was the second reading of the “Course Materials Adoption Procedure.” The lone revision since the initial reading was the addition of #1-“Materials selected should support course learning outcomes” (see handout). It wasMOVED, SECONDED, and CARRIED to support the “Course Materials Adoption Procedure” as revised.

9.2Master Syllabus-This was the second reading (see handout). The new master syllabus format will be used for all newly developed courses and course revisions. It is expected that the master syllabi for each program/discipline will be revised into the new format at the 5-year program/discipline review cycle. It was MOVED, SECONDED, and CARRIED to support the Master Syllabi as presented.

9.3Subcommittee report-The subcommittee will meet Monday, May 7, 2012 to work on the organization of department chairs and their roles. An update will be provided at the next department chairs meeting.

9.4Chair of Chairs – A new chair of chairs needs to be elected. Al Moss and Jenny Ott were nominated. J. Ott declined the nomination. Additional nominations are to be brought to the June 1, 2012 meeting. Further discussion was postponed until the June meeting as the Subcommittee is meeting on May 7, 2012 and may have additional input on how to organize the Department Chairs committee and meetings.

9.5General Education Outcomes – It was recommended at the April meeting to revise the general education outcome “Information, Numeric, and Computer Literacy” to read “Information, Numeric, and Technology Literacy.” The definition will not change. After a brief discussion it was MOVED, SECONDED, and CARRIED to support the general education outcome revision as stated.

9.6Agenda items for future meetings:

  • State and local trends, i.e. high schools offering Associate’s Degrees
  • Sharing online and blended course definitions with departments
  • Common procedures for addressing student concerns
  • New procedures and billing/calling campaign
  • Enrollment and streamlining course offerings
