Course Description
This is a mathematics course for business, social science, and liberal arts students. Problem solving using algebra, calculator, and computer techniques for business applications is the major goal of the course. Topics include systems of equations and inequalities, matrix methods, linear programming, financial mathematics, combinations, permutations, sets, and probability. Other topics may include the simplex algorithm, logic, networks, Markov chains, and an introduction to statistics.
Attendance
Regular attendance is essential for success in this class. However, if it is necessary to miss any class period, the student is responsible for any announcements made, sections covered, and assignments.
Students are expected to be punctual and attend class for the full session. The nature of this course requires that you be present in order to learn the skills necessary for effective growth in mathematics. Class participation may make the difference between grades if a student’s scores place him/her on the borderline.
Student Responsibilities
Students are expected to be adequately prepared for each class session. It is reasonable to expect at least two hours of outside study for every hour spent in the classroom.
Students are expected to assist in maintaining a classroom environment that is conducive to learning. Therefore, free discussion, inquiry, and expression are encouraged. Behavior that interferes with the instructor’s ability to conduct the class or the ability of students to benefit from that instruction is not acceptable.
Exams
There will be four exams including the final exam, with each exam weighted equally toward determining the final grade for the course. Each exam will cover the only the chapter sections studied since the previous test. The final exam will take place on the last day of class.
Missed Exams
Makeup exams are only an option under emergency conditions. A missed exam will result in a zero score. If you miss an exam because of an emergency, you must notify the instructor the day of the exam (via email or message with the faculty receptionist). The student must provide the instructor with a letter of explanation before the next class period with any attached documentation. The instructor will review the letter and inform you by the next class if and when a makeup exam will be allowed.
Assignments
Weekly assignments and review quizzes will make up the assignments portion of the course final grade. All assignments will be weighted equally. Each student is responsible for completing the assigned work in a timely fashion.
Each weekly assignment is due at the beginning of the following Monday class with responses submitted via Educator.
There will be a review quiz given during class time prior to each exam.
Missed Assignments
Review quizzes must be taken during class time and cannot be made up. Weekly assignments will not be accepted late. To allow for unforeseen circumstances and emergencies, the lowest three assignment scores will be dropped for each student.
Academic Dishonesty
Any use of unauthorized aid or obtaining any help from another individual during a test is considered cheating. Any student caught cheating on a test will receive a score of zero for that test and a formal report will be filed with the Dean of Students.

The Mathematics Center (room 2220, phone number 488-4294) is a place where students can receive help in areas where they are struggling. Please take advantage, if necessary, for this free service for KVCC students.

The student’s final grade will be determined as follows:
Assignments 40%
Four Exams (15% each) 60%
Total 100%
Grading Scale
90% to 100% = 4.0
85% to 89% = 3.5
80% to 84% = 3.0
75% to 79% = 2.5
70% to 74% = 2.0
65% to 69% = 1.5
60% to 64% = 1.0
0% to 59% = 0
