David is very sheltered.

“The shock of hearing this about Uncle Frank was doubled because my mother was saying these words. Rape. Breasts. Penis. These words I never heard my mother use.” Page 47

“‘Just hope you’re not tracking cow shit with those boots.’ Wouldn’t stop.” “Shhh. Watch your language. David can hear you.” Page 74

“That was one of my father’s rules: No one was supposed to swear in front of my mother or me.” Page 40

“I knew my mother was going to say something about Marie yelling when Frank was there, and I wanted to hear what she had to say.” Page 45

“I wandered in and out of the house, catching fragments of both conversations.” Page 51

“I pulled up Nutty and watched until I could see who it was.” Page 82

David seeks the truth. He’s always eavesdropping on different conversations. He is also very loyal to family but is disappointed in how things happened with his family.

Personalitiy traits or personal qualities

Eavesdropping.

I was about to go outside when my father turned around, stared at the house. pg. 70
All through this book David has been eaves dropping on conversations to know what’s going on. He also wants his parents to tell him stuff too. There are something’s that he wants to know what is going on in his house and in his family.

I wanted to rush over to her, to help her, to retrieve to awful duty she had taken up. pg. 134
He wants to help his mother and also protect her.
She had to take up an awful duty that her son would have been better at. He just wants to protect her and make her life easier and he probably knew how to shoot a gun better than her.
Compassion
I loved her because she talked to me and cared for me. pg 25
He cared for everyone in that house not just Marie but his parents and even his neighbor Len and daisy. He was committed to find out who killed her or what killed her because he had compassion for Marie and everyone.

David was young American boy. “I did what boys usually did and exalted in the doing” (23) said by David, who was describing himself during the story. “We lived in Bentrock, the county seat and the only town of any size of that region.” (15) This meant he was American, as Natives could only live in reservations at the time.

Coming from the book, David seemed like he was an out-going type, being American. “I’d spend as many of the day’s hours as I could outdoors” (23)Along with that, he was probably smaller than most adults, given his age. “From the summer of my twelfth year…” (11)
