Dear Parents/Guardians or Adult Student,

Kahuku High & Intermediate School’s commencement is scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 6:00pm at the Brigham Young University-Hawaii Cannon Activity Center. The commencement marks a milestone in the lives of our graduating students, and it is the school’s way of honoring each student who has met all academic, financial, and other obligations for graduation.

As we prepare for commencement, please review the attached “Expectations and Understanding for Participation in Commencement Exercises” form. Participation in our school’s commencement is voluntary. Students who wish to participate in commencement must meet the expectations detailed in the “Expectations and Understanding for Participation in Commencement Exercises” form. Participation shall be denied if requirements are not met.

A student who wishes to participate in commencement but is denied participation because requirements agreed to on the “Expectations and Understanding for Participation in Commencement Exercises” form were not met, may appeal the denial to the Principal in writing within two days of the notice of student not being able to participate in the commencement exercises.

Expectations and Understanding for Participation in Commencement Exercises Form

Board of Education (“BOE”) Policy #4540 provides that students shall be permitted to participate in commencement exercises if they: (1) meet the requirements for a diploma or a certificate; (2) have fulfilled their financial obligations; and (3) meet other conditions, established by the Department of Education, which meet the standards of clarity, reasonableness, and justifiability.

Participation in our school’s commencement is voluntary. In order to exercise the privilege of participating in commencement, students are expected to meet all of the following requirements:

(1)Complete all academic requirements for a diploma or a certificate by Friday,May 18, 2018. Students must turn in and complete all work by 3:00 p.m. on Friday May 18, 2018.

SENIORS LAST FULL DAY OF INSTRUCTION IS FRIDAY MAY 18, 2018.

(2)Meet all financial obligations by paying all school debts by 4:00 p.m. on Friday May 18, 2018. Financial debts include but are not limited to, the cost of individually assigned textbooks, materials that are lost or damaged by the student (including co-curricular activities), credit recovery balance and any restitution agreements between the students and parents and the school for vandalism or negligence pursuant to Chapter 8-19, Hawaii Administrative Rules. Financial obligations must be paid to the Business Office. Teachers must submit financial obligations to the Business Office no later than Tuesday May 15, 2018.

(3)During the 4th Quarter of the student’s senior year, the student must not be found to have committed one (1) Chapter 19 Class A or Class B offense.

(4)During the 4th Quarter of the student’s senior year, the student must not have been found to have committed two (2) Chapter 19 Class C or Class D offenses.

(Student will receive a warning after the 1st offense)

(5)Students must attend ALL practices and rehearsals for commencement. Practices and rehearsals are MANDATORY and will be held on the following date(s):

Monday, May 21 - 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the KHIS Gymnasium

Tuesday, May 22 – 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the KHIS Gymnasium

Wednesday, May 23 – 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the BYU-H CAC

Thursday, May 24– 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the BYU-H CAC (Seniors need to report back to the BYU-H CAC at 4:00 p.m. for Senior pictures)

Seniors must adhere to all BYU-H rules including the dress code and not eating/drinking in the CannonActivitiesCenter. Seniors must leave the premises upon conclusion of rehearsals. No loitering on the BYU-H campus.

(6)Wear appropriate attire at the commencement.

b. Women: White knee-length dress and white dress shoes; sandals may be worn with a back strap. No athletic shoes, slippers or excessive jewelry.

c. Men: White dress shirt, black tie, black dress pants, black socks and black shoes.

*No other clothing or alterations will be allowed.

*Students will not be allowed on the stage barefooted.

*Students will not be allowed to wear any other medals, tassels, or stoles, but the one issued by the school or DOE.

(7)Preceding or during commencement, the student must not be found by school administrator(s) to violate the law or provisions of Chapter 19. The student will not be allowed to participate in the commencement ceremony.

It is the responsibility of each student desiring to participate in the commencement exercise to review and abide by the expectations described in this form and to seek clarification if needed with Mr. Santiago.
