Junior Spring Meeting “TO DO” Notes

Next Steps:

  1. Sign up for the ACT with Writing ( for April or June testing;
    and/or SAT +essay ( for May testing (on campus) ASAP.
  2. Work on your Naviance program—personality profiler “Do What You Are” and Career Interest Inventory, college search, college matches.
  3. Work on your PSAT score corrections via the on-line PSAT program and through KHAN Academy.
  4. Schedule time daily during the summer and weekends to do research on possible majors and colleges.
  5. Get acquainted with program to learn about the CSU’s and gather information about colleges and majors in the CSU system
  6. Use the program for finding majors and colleges in the UC and CSU systems.
  7. Use the “Big Futures” on for looking at college systems and for more UC specific information.
  8. Get familiar with website to look for and apply to private and out of state colleges/universities. We will use common app to apply to private colleges.
  9. Use for listings of Catholic Colleges in the U.S. and for California.
  10. Visit colleges campuses…schedule a tour, ask questions about dorm life, food services, campus life etc. Take pictures…you can use the form given out for college visits on your visit and ask the same types of questions of each college so you get a better feel for each visit.
  11. If you want to play sports in college you must register with NCAA NOW!!!
  12. Sign up for one or more scholarship search engines like once you create a profile account scholarships will be updated for you as you age into college.
  13. Keep a file to organize your emails, campus visit information, and other college information.
  14. List the colleges that are of interest to you as you do your research and the reason you would want to attend their campuses. By the end of the summer choose 6-10 colleges that are good matches for you to apply to.
    Take an SAT/ACT prep course over the summer if your scores were lower than you wanted them to be and want to prepare better for the next sitting.
  15. By end of July or beginning of August, register again for the SAT and ACT in the fall.

Other things to do:

  1. Write your college personal statement for the UC and/or private or out of state colleges.
  1. Admissions people want to know who you are not what you do or have done.
  2. Use an analytical writing technique to explain who you are, what you have learned from your experiences so far, how those experiences have impacted you, and why you are choosing to do whatever you are going to do in college and beyond.
  3. Be sure to answer the question or “prompt” completely. (some have several parts to them)
  4. Ask someone to proof read your essay draft but be sure the work is yours.

17. Be sure to complete your Senior Profile completely and with thoughtfulness. This is the document that your counselor and teachers will use to write letters of recommendation for you. It is also used to help find scholarships and awards for you in the spring.
