Junior High VOCAL MUSIC and GENERAL MUSIC

2013- 2014

Vocal Music and General Music will be held at Spalding Academy the 7th period of the day. Band will be during this period as well, so those students not in Band at Spalding High School will be in General Music at Spalding Academy. Band will be tues thru Thurs, and Vocal music will be run on Mon and Fri.

Uniform: For our performances at Christmas and Spring I would very much like each student to have a light shirt and dark bottom for our concerts. Very similar to your expectations in 5th and 6th for band

Activities: Christmas season, Musicfest / Spring concert.

Daily Grading- 1-5 points can be earned each day in class based on attitude, effort participation and attendance. Students grade themselves based on the form for how they have participated daily.

Performance Grading - 50 points may be earned each time there is a concert or musical performance.

Daily Assignments for General Music Classroom: varied points

Students are to turn in assignments on the day they are due, unless preexcused. If they fail to turn in homework the day it is due, day two will be a 5% deduction for that assignments grade,. After that the grade will result in a zero for that assignment. It they are sick, they are to get the assignment turned in two days after they return to school.

General Music: This will be for the students who will not be participating in band. We will be working on Music Theory, Reading & Writing, Folk Dance and Square Dance, Music History, Garage Band, Guitar, Recorder and other Music Assessments. They may also be in charge of staging or whatever needed for fall and spring time performances. Vocal Music Class will also be doing several of these musical elements as well as the choral ensemble.

Absentees and Tardees: Tardees will be dealt with daily, and more than 10 absentees per semester will result in no credit for that semester of work. This is a handbook policy from both schools . ANY student not preexcused from my class as the handbooks state will be considered absent for that day. It will be up to each student to let me know the day in advanced if this is a preexcused event. (Just like if they had a job they'd let their boss know in advance that they will be late or not at work the next day). This includes ballgames, doc appts., dentist appts., chiropractor, school events or whatever comes up during the year. Chorus is a large class so communication is a must for liability or accountability so I know where each student is and I'm not needing to track down students after class starts. On Day 7 the grade will result in a zero for that assignment. It they are sick, they are to get the assignment turned in two days after they return to school, if just gone from class but back to school later that same day I would expect the assignment done that day.

______If my son/daughter is in general music they will may need to find a guitar (2nd semester) to use for class. Can be borrowed, used or new (talk with Mrs. Thome before you buy though.)
