Description: This course introduces first-year students to the connections between undergraduate education and the pursuit of medicine and other health related careers. Each class will focus on a specific content area related to the pathway to medicine such as professionalism, team work, public health, biomedical research, and communication. Because the course is located at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions campus (East Baltimore), medical and graduate students will play a vital role in the course. In the last hour of class, medical students will share their research or activities, which are particularly meaningful to them, and insights from their undergraduate experiences that prepared them for the rigors and intensity of medical school. By the end of the course, students will be exposed to variety of components of medicine and perspectives on the life at Hopkins Medicine.

Course Goals:

  • Introduce students to medicine through the experiences, research, and perspective of current Hopkins medical and MD/PHD students;
  • Understand the impact of biomedical research on patient care;
  • Communicate effectively your story;
  • Expose students to different pathways to the health professions;
  • Introduce to the culture of health care including topics such as team work, communication, and professionalism;
  • Introduce connections and distinctions between medicine and public health.

Grading: To receive a Satisfactory, you must receive a C- or above (70% or above). Any grade below a C- earns you a mark of Unsatisfactory.

Final Project: 25 pts for each journey mapped out on paper (3 required; 4th extra credit)

Homework Assignments: 20 pts each

Readings: 10 pts each

Professionalism: 50 pts (based on attendance, thoughtful engagement, and respect for classmates, speakers, and guests)
