Patient instructions for 24 pH probe or 48-hour Bravo pH study
You are scheduled for a 24 pH probe or 48-hour Bravo pH study. The pH monitoring system is used for gastroesophageal pH measurements and monitoring of gastric reflux. The study involves a pH capsule(approximately the size of a large pill that is attached to your esophagus )or a pH probe (a catheter inserted into the nose down the esophagus). During the study, the Bravo capsule or probe measures the pH in the esophagus and transmits this information to asmall receiver worn on your belt or waistband. You will be given a diary to write down the times when you have reflux symptoms (e.g. coughing, heartburn, chest pain, regurgitation), and when you eat or lie down. After the study is completed, you need to return the diary and the receiver to the clinic that afternoon. The probe will be removed from the nose. Several days after the study, the capsule naturally falls off the digestive tract and is eliminated from the body.
Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment. If you are unable to keep your appointment, you must cancel at least 48 hoursin advance, or you will be charged $25.
PLEASE FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY AND CAREFULLY:
Wear loose comfortable clothing.
Do NOT eat or drink anythingafter midnight. You can drink water up to six hours prior to capsule insertion.
Discontinue all proton pump inhibitors (Prevacid, Prilosec, Aciphex, Nexium)forseven days prior to the study.
Discontinue all other medications known to interfere with gastric funtion (Propulsid, Reglan, Axid, Pepcid, Tagmet, Zantac) 72 hours prior to the study.
Discontinue all antacids (Maalox, Mylanta, Tums, Rolaids, Amphogel, Gaviscon) 24 hours before study.
You will be able to drive to and from your appointment unless an upper endoscopy (EGD) is required for Bravo capsule insertion. That procedure requires sedation and you MUST have someone drive you home after the procedure. Please refer to EGD procedure and preparation if an EGD is to be done at the same time as the Bravo pH probe.
You can NOT have an MRI study done for 30 days after having the Bravo procedure.
If the esophageal study is being performed to test the effectiveness of medicine, patients should continue their normal medication.
