RICHARD PLANKO WINS $3,000 FIRST PRIZE IN MDUSBC SENIOR MASTERS AT INDIAN LANES

Richard Planko of Novi came back after losing his first match in the finals to defeat David Silverman of Farmington Hills 418-390 winning the MDUSBC Senior Masters title at Indian Lanes in Wyandotte and taking home the top prize of $3,000.

After qualifying 12th with a six-game total of 1,391, Planko beat Mitchell Jabczenski Sr. of Novi 408-363, Steven Hubble of Westland 424-404, John Milletics of Sandusky 508-469, Rick Capaldi of Canton 444-441 and Silverman the first time 437-391 to become the top seed. After Silverman emerged from the loser’s bracket Planko lost to Silverman 403-376 before avenging that loss with the 418-390 triumph.

Planko averaged 220.3 for 20 games of competition.

“I don’t believe it, it’s amazing.” said Planko. “Every match worked out perfect, except for the next to last one.”

“This win ranks right behind my second place finish in the Hamtramck Singles tournament in 2000, which was worth $16,000.” he said.

Silverman qualified 31st with 1,333. His final three games of qualifying were 248, 249 and 214 to barely qualify for match play by six pins. In match play he remained undefeated with victories over Larry Best of Brownstown 428-427, Richard Faber of Warren 493-437, Robert Caliguire of Wyandotte 537-400, Fred Bauss III of Eastpointe 490-439 before falling to Planko 437-391. He then beat Harold Sullins of Chesterfield Township 460-386 and then beat Planko 403-376 to force the final match, won by Planko 418-390. Silverman settled for $1,500.

Sullins qualified eighth with 1,407. In match play he beat Joe Fitzsimmons of Waterford Township 443-365, Dave Tulak of Taylor 537-418 before falling to Rick Capaldi 475-417. In the loser’s bracket he rebounded with wins over Fred Whitmore of Detroit 521-404, Nick Cipiti of Clinton Township 546-496, Fred Bauss 482-422 before avenging his loss to Capaldi 441-419 and finally getting knocked out by Silverman 460-386. Sullins averaged 235.5 and cashed for $1,000.

Capaldi was the top qualifier with 1,468 and beat Nick Cipiti 444-402, Joe Krajenke of Clinton Township 469-432, Sullins 475-417 before falling into the loser’s bracket with the loss to Planko 444-441. In the loser’s bracket Capaldi beat Tim Magyar of Redford 496-462 before being knocked out of the competition by Sullins 441-419. He averaged 234 and took home $750.

In match play Harold Sullins bowled a 300 game in his win over Fred Whitmore. He also bowled a 804 series for the first three games of match play on Saturday.

Magyar finished fifth for $500 and averaged 230.8.

Bauss ended up sixth, picking up $500 after averaging 222.8.

Cipiti finished seventh, averaged 223.5 and cashed for $400.

Caliguire took home $400 for his eighth place finish, averaging 218.4.

Larry Dagenais of Troy won the Super Senior competition for non-qualifiers 60 years of age and over. He defeated Leo Scantamburlo of Riverview 254-207 for the title. He won $200 for his efforts and Scantamburlo walked away with a check for $175.
