Job Purpose

To work in the areas of prevention, protection and response to minimise and actively reduce the risk to life and damage to property in the community.

To protect life and property and to serve the community by utilising operational resources and providing solutions to unforeseen events through safe and effective means, identified through Risk Assessment and delivered in a professional and considerate manner in accordance with the Integrated Risk Management Plan (IRMP).

As a supervisory manager, assist with managing and leading a team through development and assessment to meet set objectives.

To work within and actively promote the Core Values of Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Principal Accountabilities

1Resolving Operational Incidents

By responding to operational incidents and implementing an appropriate course of action, lead and support people to resolve Level 1 operational incidents and to close down the operational phase of an incident and conduct a debrief with relevant people.

2Supervision of Teams and Personnel

Through planning and assessment of work and through feedback to individuals, lead the work of teams and individuals to achieve their objectives in line with the Corporate Aims.

3Managing Activities

Through agreeing objectives with relevant people, manage your daily activities and those of your team. You will encourage suggestions for improvements from those you supervise and resolve problems within your level of authority and ability. You will work within the Health, Safety and Welfare Practices and Guidelines of Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

4Management of Information

Through gathering informationfrom a range of sources to meet specified objectives, you will inform and advise others on fire service matters within your own area of responsibility and authority. Where necessary you will hold meetings of small groups of people with clear objectives and agendas to make the best use of the time available.

5Effective Personal Performance

By establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, take responsibility for personal performance to improve and develop your own skills. This will include obtaining feedback, updating development plans and being proactive towards personal development.

6Physical Fitness

By maintaining the required level of physical fitness you will maintain the capacity to meet the physical demands placed upon the role as determined by the Service Policy in force at that time.

7 Development of teams and individuals

By contributing to the identification and planning of development needs, support the development activities and assessment of teams and individuals ensuring that the team objectives are met.

8 Investigate and Report

By gathering information, providing findings and conclusions, investigate and report on events in various formats (written and verbal) to inform future practice by communicating with relevant people.

9 Resource Management

By making positive and constructive recommendations within your own sphere of responsibility, support the efficient use of resources. You must monitor the resources used by your team and under your control at appropriate intervals.

10 Responding to poor performance

Respond to poor performance of team members, through providing constructive and positive support to individuals experiencing difficulties in their work. This may include implementing disciplinary procedures. You will need to ensure that personnel in your team have clear, accurate and timely information regarding disciplinary or grievance procedures.

11Assessing Candidate Performance

By applying the current assessment method and standards in force at that time within Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Specialist Accountabilities

  1. To be responsible as the first point of contact for managerial and other issues.

2.To be responsible for the day-to-day running of your allocated fire station.
