Job summary

The Marie Curie Nursing Service (MCNS) provides highly respected specialist support and care to patients with life limiting conditions, in their own homes. We aim to provide the best possible end of life care, while also providing patient’s families with the emotional support they need.

Sponsored by Marie Curie, the End of Life Care Partnership (ELCP) involves seven health and social care partners working with Marie Curie to design and deliver a pioneering two year project.The aim is to enhance and develop existing services for local people with any diagnosis at the end of life by providing direct care, education and training and a coordinated referrals system/single point of access.

Reporting to the ‘London & South East Regional Manager’, the ‘Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM)’, Southampton role provides clinical leadership and professional line management to the Marie Curie ‘Senior Nurses’, ‘Registered Nurses’ and ‘Health Care Assistants’ within the local acute and community area teams.

The CNM will oversee the clinical delivery of the ELCP, working closely with ‘Multi-Disciplinary Teams’, ‘District Nursing Teams’, other CNMs and with the ‘Marie Curie Care Coordination’ team in order to coordinate workforce and ensure delivery of excellent care. They also work closely with the ‘Regional Manager’, ‘Regional Business and Service Development Team’ and local ‘Health & Social Care Commissioners’ to further develop the local service offering.

As a CNM, you will be able to work independently when necessary, and also as a valued member of the Regional and National MCNS team. You will have experience of nurse management, ideally but not necessarily in a palliative care or oncology setting, alongside a firm understanding of community working. Demonstrating a high level of personal and professional integrity, you will lead by example; communicate effectively; build productive working relationships with both clinical and non-clinical individuals; develop your staff, leverage their knowledge and expertise, and, ensure excellent clinical governance to drive the end of life care agenda with local stakeholders and colleagues.By drawing on strong clinical and management capabilities, you will improve service efficiencies, encourage the sharing of good practice and provide the leadership and support that will make a difference to the experience of patients at the end of life and, in so doing, positively support their carers.

Duties and responsibilities

Clinical leadership and operational management

  • Provides clinical leadership and operational management of Marie CurieNursing Services in Southampton City and defined parts of West Hampshire, working in conjunction with partners to integrateand enhance end of life care across several settings.
  • Provides clinical leadership, expert knowledge and understanding of end of life care, working closely with Marie Curie Managers and local service leads to provide seven days a week end of life care.
  • Works with local leads and the ELCP Project Board to ensure the ongoing assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care.
  • Responds to incidents that threaten service quality, developing solutions to mitigate risks and maintain high standards of care.
  • Provides the clinical leadership link for a local “single point of access” service, advising and guiding local clinical staff on appropriate packages of care according to patient need and service capacity.
  • Supports the implementation of the Marie Curie Nursing Service strategy by working with the national teams and where necessary supporting other colleagues within Caring Services to deliver key targets.
  • Provides an overview of the caseload and the clinical needs of patients and families to inform workforce deployment, working with local service leads to prioritise care, assign appropriate skills and communicate decisions to associated healthcare professionals.
  • Contributes to local End of Life Care Strategy Development and Delivery.

Communication and Human Resources

  • Line manages Marie Curie nursing and coordination staff based in the acute hospital, community care teams (including rapid response) and at a “single point of access” centre, monitoring performance to ensure they have the resources, support and training required to deliver safe and effective end of life care.
  • Ensures nursing staff are recruited and managed in line with Marie Curie employment policies and procedures, leading the recruitment and selection process and attending investigations or disciplinary hearings, as required.
  • Organises the orientation and induction of new nursing staff, delegating as required.
  • Holds regular team meetings to develop and empower the team, manage conflict, disseminate information and consult and effect changes.
  • Ensures annual personal development plans are undertaken, setting objectives in line with Marie Curie project aims and local service requirements.
  • Produces and reports clear and concise reports of strategic, clinical and service activities, sharing information as appropriate.
  • Empowers the team to ensure information is recorded in a timely way and shared with due regard to confidentiality and data protection obligations.

Education and training

  • Identifies and facilitates training and education to stakeholders, expanding local medical and clinical knowledge of end of life care
  • Engages in regular review of current literature through involvement of a journal club, clinical networking and conference attendance, ensuring clinical decision-making is evidence based.
  • Provides mentorship and supervision for Marie Curie staff, encouraging confidence and skill in others, developing a culture of reflective practice.
  • Determines the clinical education and training needs of the workforce and works closely with the practice educators to ensure the regional training plan is delivered.
  • Supports Marie Curie nurses involved in implementing the Amber Care Bundle and Advance Care Planning in the acute healthcare setting.
  • Maintains an effective learning environment, actively involving the Marie Curie team in teaching and educating peers, patients and carers.

Monitoring quality

  • Ensures registered nurses work within the NMC code of professional conduct and the agreed competency framework; and that HCAs work within the MCCC competency framework and Marie Curie code of conduct.
  • Ensures that there is a supervision framework in place for all staff delivering care to patients and families within their area.
  • Adheres to the NMC code of professional conduct in the performance and management of nursing duties and is professionally accountable for practice and managerial issues.
  • Keeps up to date with current issues in nursing and changes to practice in order to ensure their own ongoing personal and professional development.
  • Ensures that the Marie Curie Nursing Service meets agreed quality assurance standards, developing local protocols within relevant governance structures to ensure good practice is clearly outlined and followed.
  • Contributes to developing systems to support user feedback and takes responsibility for the implementation of such systems within the Nursing Service.
  • Assumes responsibility for the management of clinical incidents and complaints within their area and work within the Charity’s clinical governance framework in order to achieve targets.
  • Leads in the audit process for their area and participate in research as required.

Additional responsibilities

  • In association with the Regional Manager and other senior colleagues, is responsible for project management in specified areas to improve the delivery of care.
  • In association with the Regional Managers takes responsibility for ensuring the health and safety of staff working within a defined area.
  • Attends regional and national meetings, as required.
  • Undertakes activities from time to time representing Marie Curie Cancer Care to outside groups or the general public.
  • Travelling will be required and may be extensive, depending on area. Some overnight stays will be required for meetings and training purposes.
  • Acts up in the absence of the Regional Manager as required.
  • Participates in the on-call rota as required.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communications with patients, carers and health professionals, participating in local NHS palliative care strategy/End of life groups and networks to raise awareness of Marie Curie Nursing Service contributions.
