SIC To provide community youth and adults with safe, interactive programs that promote good citizenship, character development, creativity and discipline, designed to inspire them to face life’s challenges with enthusiasm and dignity. To be an advocate for the underserved to provide social service programs for low and moderate-income families, the elderly and physically and mentally challenged. To provide special housing programs for single-parent families, low-income families, the elderly and the physically challenged that include case management, child care assistance and support programs as needed. Plan, develop, and implement programs such as, tutorial assistance, personal, career and vocational counseling. Provide employment referral services, job placement assistance, family counseling and independent life-skill training.

SIC provides innovative and engaging programs for youth and adults. There is a Teen Leadership program, which serves as an extension of the Freedom School program, civically engaging scholars with the community. The afterschool program is for children of the Northpointe apartment housing community. FCI job training program that provides professional development training for participants and assist them in securing employment.SIC host the Children’s Defense Funds® Freedom School program, which is a six-week literacy enrichment program.

Position Summary:

The role of the Youth Organizer includes working collaboratively to civically engage youth and their families year round. Through the collaborative efforts scholars are engaged in a citywide coalition aimed at working toward educational equity and dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline. Work with Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) schools and school board members. Developing innovative activities and workshops to enhance students’ political education knowledge base and strengthen leadership skills, this includes mobilization of Long Beach youth primarily in the North Long Beach area and engage youth in campaigns and social actions centered around educational, economic and racial issues that impact students of color or poor communities. The position is primarily based in North Long Beach, it does require traveling to different areas of Long Beach and Los Angeles.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Conduct outreach to Long Beach youth interested in community involvement and social activism from the CDF Freedom Schools® program, Long Beach Unified School District schools, and local community events.
  • Build and sustain a base of 25 youth members, from CDF Freedom School® scholars and LBUSD students.
  • Attend monthly Youth Work Group Meetings and Youth Committee meetings.
  • Facilitate bi-weekly meetings with youth leaders to coordinate community organizing efforts and coalition efforts. Engage youth in leadership development activities and workshops.
  • Recruit youth for CDF-Freedom Schools® program, with a goal of 10-15 youth for the program. Engage scholars year round from the 6-week program.
  • Create culturally and linguistically appropriate educational materials to engage youth and community members.
  • Contribute to maintenance of SIC’s calendar of events, organizational databases, and all records and reports for SIC, community stakeholders, and funders.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or in progress of completion and or 2 years of community organizing experience.
  • Experience working with children and families.
  • Experience working on campaigns and developing campaigns.
  • Experience working local, state and or federal legislation that impacts youth or families.
  • Ability to facilitate group activities and meetings.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication verbally, orally and written.
  • Strong time and task management
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and negotiation skills.
  • Genuine commitment and sensitivity to children and community issues.
  • Restorative approach to working with diverse groups of people.
  • Highly motivated and yet, team oriented.
  • Able to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Able to navigate public transportation and or has reliable transportation.
  • Knowledge of computer and other standard office equipment skills sufficient to prepare flyers and other communications
