We operate in partnership with communities, non-governmental organisations and governments in Borneo, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, India and Tanzania. Since our foundation as a charity in 1984, Raleigh volunteers have become a global community of more than 36,000 people committed to building a sustainable future.

Every year Raleigh works with almost two thousand volunteers from around the world across its two main programmes: expeditions and International Citizen Service (ICS).

Overall Purpose of the Post

The Volunteer Recruitment Manager role is responsible for managing the enquiry, application, screening and some selection processes for all UK and international young volunteers across Raleigh’s core expedition programme, ICS programme and any new programmes. The postholder will conduct regular management reporting and trend analysis in order to forecast volunteer and country project numbers. They will also budget income projections as well as account manage international referral agencies. Working collaboratively with the marketing and volunteer delivery teams is essential to ensure and a clear and consistent volunteer journey, a continual flow of applications and accurate delivery planning of UK selection and training events.

Main responsibilities

Enquiries, applications, screening and selection

  • Contributing to the creation and continual evolution of the volunteer journeys for different programmes and bursaries
  • Designing and managing the process for handling incoming enquiries,following up on enquiries from potential participants and ensuring excellent customer service
  • Creating copy to engage enquirers and aid conversion to application
  • Streamlining the application and selection systems and processes for all volunteers and referral partners
  • Advising country teams on their recruitment and selection processes for in-country volunteers
  • Managing relationships with international referral partners to ensure a smooth engagement and application process
  • Working collaboratively with Marketing and Engagement Manager and Learning and Development Manager to ensure a clear volunteer journey on Raleigh’s website, consistent messaging throughout the journey and to identify, use and monitor new communications platforms
  • Liaising with the database manager and the International Resources Manager so that Raleigh’s CRM database, Netsuite, offers an efficient and clear volunteer journey
  • Regular management reporting on the application funnels for different programmes, booking periods, popularity of programmes and some demographic breakdown
  • Supporting safety and programmes teams in scheduling programme dates that work for a variety of nationalities and life stages
  • Managing the process and decision-making for the screening of applications and interviewing of candidates for applicants that apply directly to Raleigh
  • Managing the processing of applicants to the International Citizen Service (ICS) programme, inviting them to selection and ensuring accurate use of Jobscience
  • Reporting internally and to the ICS hub on the recruitment funnel of ICS applicants
  • Sharing application data with the ICS marketing officer so that they can plan recruitment activities to ensure a continual supply of new applicants and that diversity targets are being met
  • Liaising regularly with the Learning and Development manager to help him plan a schedule of selection events that has adequate capacity and fits with the recruitment schedule
  • Managing the selection board and decision-making for ICS applicants
  • Attending Raleigh open events and providing additional resource for other events

Youth partnerships programme

  • Supporting youth partnership officer on the design and improvements to the recruitment and selection process for young people recruited through youth partnerships
  • Ensuring Youth Partnerships Officer is working with partners that fit with our strategic aims. Attending some partner meetings
  • Regular management reporting on progress against recruitment targets
  • Active member of project team to review partnership programme and widening participation
  • Liaising with fundraising team to understand fundraising income for partnerships
  • Coaching Youth Partnership Officer and liaising with Volunteer Delivery Manager to problem-shoot any internal governance issues or account issues, to work collaboratively across departments and ensure a joined up volunteer journey and fit with other audiences

Staff and Financial Management

  • Responsible for line managing, supporting and developing the Enquiries and Selection Officer and the Youth Partnerships Officer
  • Conduct workplace induction for new staff and managers as required
  • Supporting Director of Recruitment, Delivery and Communications on annual budgeting of volunteer numbers and income
  • Managing ICS travel pre-selection budget

Other

  • To undertake other duties as required by the Head of Recruitment, Delivery and Communications
  • Work cooperatively and flexibly with teams in the organisation
  • Maintain confidentiality over personal information relating to Raleigh staff and volunteers
  • Contributing to the development of internal systems and processes
  • Sharing best practice, ideas, learnings and successes within the team and organisation-wide to maximise the effectiveness of marketing activities

Skills and Experience

Essential experience

• Knowledge of the work of Raleigh

• Track record in management reporting and analysing data to identify and monitor trends

• Experience of using CRM databases to record customer contact

• Evidence of mapping out customer journeys or processes

• Copywriting and multiple platform usage to engage customers or employees

• Well developed project management skills involving a number of workstreams

• Innovative and can-do approach to problem-solving

• Track record in being results-driven and achieving targets

• Experience in building relationships at a professional level

• Evidence of providing superior customer care

• Budget management

• Line management of at least one full-time employee including performance management, appraisals, personal development and workload management

• Track record in multi-tasking and structuring and prioritising workload to meet deadlines

The holiday entitlement is 25 working days per year, plus bank holidays

Normal office hours are Monday to Friday, 9.00 - 5.00, although weekend and evening working will be required for Raleigh meetings, events, phone calls and at very busy times of the year (2-3 evenings per month). You are expected to attend one evening event per month which will not attract TOIL unless the event is outside London and requires travelling time to return to the office. All other events will attract TOIL or flexible working hours as agreed prior to the event with the employee’s line manager, and in accordance with the guidance set out in the staff handbook. National and possibly international travel will be required.
