Job Title: TRAINEE CHILDCARE WORKER

Hours: 20 hours/week

Accountable to: Early Learning Coordinator

Location: May be located at any of the Shankill Sure Start Family Centres or Programme for Two Year Old settings

Role:

The role of the Trainee Childcare Worker will be to provide a childcare service for the children of parents attending Sure Start parenting programmes. The successful candidate will also be responsible for providing support to Family Support staff in Parent & Toddler groups and assisting in Tiny Steps, the developmental programme for two year olds, delivered at four settings within the Greater Shankill area.

Key Responsibilities:

1.  To provide a safe, stimulating and varied programme of play and learning opportunities for children attending Shankill Sure Start programmes and services

2.  To promote the social, emotional, physical, creative and intellectual development of children and to work in the interest of children at all times, while ensuring the maintenance and improvement of a welcoming child centred environment

3.  To contribute to development of programmes and activities for children specific to their needs and to seek professional advice about changes in a child’s wellbeing

4.  To develop supportive relationships with parents/carers and encourage parental involvement in Shankill Sure Start services and programmes

5.  To ensure preparation and maintenance of all equipment used within the setting, such as rooms, materials and equipment and ensure all facilities and resources are left clean and tidy after sessions

6.  To ensure a good standard of hygiene and safety and observe all relevant health and safety rules and guidelines

7.  To prepare snacks (where applicable) ensuring compliance with current food hygiene legislation

8.  To keep a register and attendance record of children as required

9.  To ensure confidentiality of information relating to children and families at all times

10.  To comply with Sure Start policies and procedures and be aware of and work in accordance with relevant legislation at all times

11.  To submit reports as required

12.  To attend relevant training courses and meetings as appropriate

13.  To undertake any other relevant duties as considered appropriate by the Early Learning Coordinator

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Criteria:

§  Experience of working with children under 4 years old (paid or unpaid)

§  Good verbal and written communication skills

§  Able to work effectively as part of a team and use own initiative

§  Good time management and a willingness to work flexible hours

§  Punctual, eager and enthusiastic

§  Can do attitude

§  Willing to undertake training as required

§  Able to use a computer to update records

Desirable Criteria:

§  NVQ 2 level 2 in Childcare/Playwork/Education or equivalent.

§  1 years paid work experience of working with children under 4 years old

§  First Aid

§  Experience of working in a childcare or daycare setting

§  Child Protection training

§  Knowledge and understanding of the importance of observation and planning

§  An understanding child development

§  An understanding of child protection issues

§  Experience of working with parents

§  Driver
