Purpose of the role:The purpose of the role is to provide support for academic work in the Sport and Exercise Science laboratories.

Main areas of responsibility:

  • To support academic staff in laboratory/seminar demonstrations across a range of core and choice sport and exercise science or sport coaching modules, including any preparation work needed to support the module. This may also include collection and analysis of capillary and/or venous blood in support of laboratory activities;
  • To ensure all required equipment is booked with technical staff in preparation for laboratory/seminar demonstrations;
  • To support project/dissertation data collection work at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • To join first year module assessment teams marking verbal and written responses from students according to specific and detailed criteria provided by the module lecturer;
  • To support academic staff in undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum development activities that aim to improve student recruitment, student experience, student achievement and retention of students;
  • To support academic staff in their research by undertaking a range of research activity and supporting the commercial activity of the school working with schools and clients in the laboratories;
  • To be responsible for the systematic collection and recording of calibration data to provide information about the accuracy, reliability, and validity of laboratory equipment advising the technical staff where equipment is not functioning correctly;
  • Work with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) Laboratory Director in the preparation for BASES Laboratory Re-accreditation;
  • To be aware of health and safety issues in a laboratory environment.

  • Knowledge of relevant Health and Safety requirements;
  • Understanding of the notions of validity, reliability etc. with respect to laboratory equipment and techniques;
  • A good knowledge of experimental techniques in Sport/Exercise Psychology and Neuroscience,
with some knowledge from either Sport/Exercise Biomechanics or Sport/Exercise Physiology and Nutrition. / A/I
Qualifications /
  • A good (1 or 2:1), relevant honours degree, (Sport and Exercise Science or closely related subject area) or equivalent.

  • Any appointment is generally made at the bottom of the salary range for the grade dependent upon experience and previous salary.
  • This post is permanent and for 18.5 hours per week.
  • Annual leave entitlements are shown in the table below and increase after 5 years’ service. In addition to the eight Bank Holidays, there are University discretionary days between Christmas and New Year. All leave, including bank holidays and discretionary days, are pro-rated for part-time employees.
