(On a daily basis the post-holder will work within a team co-ordinated by a Workshop Manager, but the School Manager will oversee recruitment, deployment, development and training)
Main areas of
responsibility:
- To organise demonstration and inductions and to prepare and deliver technical instruction and guidance in consultation with academics and other technical staff. To be available for consultation on matters arising and ensure the understanding of skills and applications are met to the required standard.
2.To organise and administer in consultation with the Workshop Manager, technical services in the workshops and to provide technical support for the academic needs of students and staff using these workshops.
3.To ensure that safe codes of practice are maintained and comply fully with all safety legislation and security arrangements.
Specific Duties
- To organise demonstration and induction and to prepare and deliver technical instruction and guidance in consultation with academics and other technical staff. To be available for consultation on matters arising and ensure the understanding of skills and applications are met to the required standard.
1.1To organise, prepare and deliver specialised demonstration and general induction to prepared guidelines and up to 75% proportionate for the post
1.2To understand that the academic leader is responsible for the overall management of the curriculum and the demonstrator delivers the specified instruction effectively
1.3To plan and deliver instruction, in accordance with the academic requirements of the subject; on the safe use of materials, tools and equipment to enable students to conduct their work.
1.4To maintain a record of attendance and complete induction records for technical demonstration, induction and health and safety competence.
1.5To provide, in accordance with the academic requirements of the subject, surgeries for consultation and technical support on matters of a technical nature arising out of technical demonstrations, inductions and set projects.
1.6To recognise that support is available for all taught subjects and research programmes where relevant
2.To organise and administer, in consultation with the Workshop Manager, technical services in the Workshops and to provide technical support for the academic needs of students and staff using these workshops.
2.1To be responsible for the technical aspects of maintaining a clean, tidy and safeworking environment for staff and students using the Workshops.
2.2To evaluate and keep up to date on new techniques, specialist materials and equipment and maintain relevant information on file for reference. To develop and be able to deliver new techniques as appropriate and necessary.
2.3To maintain, check and examine equipment within the workshops as per the routine maintenance schedule and report any defects in equipment that require specialist support to the Workshop Manager. Maintain records of routine maintenance and examinations.
2.4To assist and support academic staff with planning annual assessment shows, organising and supervising the preparation of the accommodation and the erection and dismantling of display media and materials used.
2.5To ensure a high standard of security is maintained for equipment, materials and the accommodation.
2.6In liaison with academic staff and the Workshop Manager to ensure that as a budget assistant, adequate supplies of materials are available within the constraints of the workshop budget
2.7To attend meetings and working groups as appropriate, to respond and provide information about the level of technical induction required within course criteria
3.To ensure that safe codes of practice are maintained and comply fully with all safety legislation and security arrangements.
3.1 To ensure that all machinery, electrical equipment, facilities and tools are kept fully operational, maintained and safe to use and that users have attended the relevant induction and are competent in their use.
3.2To take all reasonable steps to ensure that users and work areas comply with all appropriate safety regulations and codes of practice.
3.3To be responsible for ensuring that all Health and Safety records relevant to the Workshops (e.g. COSHH assessments, risk assessments, electrical testing, PUWER etc.) are kept up to date and where appropriate readily available to staff and students. To also ensure that new materials and equipment comply with current safety regulations.
3.4To provide information on and ensure that all relevant safety legislation and codes of practice are complied with during demonstrations and inductions.
3.5To assist School Managers in making assessments of the potential risks before and during the use of specialist materials and techniques
3.6To assist academic staff in taking all reasonable and practicable steps to ensure that users of facilities comply with the appropriate safety legislation and codes of practice.
3.7To comply with all appropriate safety legislation and codes of practice and ensure that the appropriate steps are taken when acquiring any new materials, equipment etc that may be subject to current safety legislation.
3.8To liaise with the Safety Adviser that relevant health and safety regulations are kept up to date, and codes of practice are compliant with current legislation
Selection
criteria: The criteria below indicate the qualities that are needed to do the job well. Candidates will be selected according to the extent to which they satisfy these criteria. Evidence of potential will also be considered. Most of the criteria must normally be met in order to qualify for selection.
Essential:
•Knowledge/qualifications: a recognised, relevant qualification; appropriate post training experience with the ability to be able to work confidently and effectively; substantial practical knowledge and experience of specifictechniques, skills and media; good working knowledge of advancing technology in the subject.
•Skills: a sound working knowledge of the traditional and photo-mechanical technical aspects of fine art screen-printing. Essential qualities would include but not be limited to acrylic-basedcolour mixing and multi-colour printing,demonstrate a high standard of printing and able to anticipate the users requirements (needs) of the workshops daily and planned activities.
•Health &Safety: knowledge of current, relevant health and safety regulations and guidelines; commitment to safe working practices and their implications and keeping up to date on relevant health and safety regulations and procedures; commitment to careful and correct use of equipment and materials, ensuring their maintenance and security.
•Communication: being able to respond to the information needs of others and committed to providing it; is able to communicate technical information to students and staff as suitable to the situation; cooperative and persuasive; listens well and is sensitive to others needs.
•Self-motivation: can work with the minimum of supervision; has a record of successful performance at an appropriate level of responsibility; sets and meets objectives on own initiative; is committed to continuous self-development.

•Physical: the ability to carry out the physical requirements of the job which could entail some lifting; the ability to distinguish colours; sufficient mobility to be able to access and prepare the work areas; sufficient manual dexterity to be able to manipulate and maintain the equipment effectively
Desirable:
•an insight into the needs and priorities of students and teaching staff
•experience in adobe creative suite, to support and advise both students and staff in the preparation of digitally image files and production of film positives for stencil making. Therefore anunderstanding of large format printing for these digitally generated outputs using Raster Image Processorsoftwaresuch as 'wasatchsoftrip' and 'EFI colourproof'.
