Purpose of the role

To provide basic advice and support to students in the library and computer rooms and to assist with checking equipment in teaching rooms.

Line management responsibility for:

Main areas of responsibility:

·  To shelve and tidy the resources within the Library.

To re-shelve (replace on the shelves) library material returned from loan or used within the library, maintaining the correct classified (numeric) or other sequences as appropriate.

To collect library material for re-shelving from the Help Desks and from the library reading areas, and sort into order for re-shelving.

To tidy resources within the Library as requested by the member of staff on duty.

To ensure that resources are shelved in a timely and accurate manner.

·  To provide basic advice and support to users of the Library.

To answer the telephone and take messages as needed.

To assist students with basic computer queries in the Library including calling for additional help/support if appropriate.

To maintain awareness of IS resources and services and proactively promote their use.

To provide basic advice and support to users of open access computing facilities.
To carry out the duties as detailed on the daily task list, ensuring the provided uniform is worn at all times.

To operate a basic advice service at scheduled times, in order to provide support for students using standard applications and other computing services provided within the area, such as answering basic application or printing enquiries in computer areas, helping students set up wireless connections using existing documentation.

To action preventative maintenance such as the cleaning of mice, keyboards and monitors as directed.

To check equipment operability; promptly recording and reporting all faults or issues via the Service Desk

To ensure printing services are appropriately stocked with consumables (e.g. filling printer paper trays and replacing printer cartridges) and inform the technical staff of the need for timely replacements.

To proactively promote the use of Information Services documents, online help systems and other information systems within the open access facilities.

·  To undertake other duties as appropriate as agreed with the User Services Librarian.

In addition to the above areas of responsibility Student Helpers may be asked to carry out other tasks within Information Services. This may include temporary deployment to other Information Services sites/service points to cover for peak demand, moving furniture, helping set up new equipment, supporting the Service Desk, supporting students setting up in halls of residence and wifi at the start of term.

·  Any appointment is generally made at the bottom of the salary range for the grade dependent upon experience and previous salary.

·  This is a part time casual post on a zero hours contract to enable a range of shifts to be covered as required

·  Annual leave entitlements are shown in the table below and increase after 5 years’ service. In addition, to the eight Bank Holidays, there are university discretionary days between Christmas and New Year. All leave, including bank holidays and discretionary days, are pro-rated for part time employees.
