Job Title: Shop Manager

Location: Age UK Birmingham Shop

Job Purpose and Role:

To manage two Age UK Birmingham shops, one being a temporary ‘pop up’ shop, ensuring the efficient and effective management of staff, premises and stock. To provide a high level of retail customer service and shop presentation in relation to agreed performance targets. To ensure all appropriate standards of security and health and safety are met.

Main Responsibilities:

Income /Sales

1)  Maximise shop income, profit and achieve agreed performance targets

2)  Promote Gift Aid to customers and sign up donors to enhance shop income

3)  Maintain a high level of commercial awareness by staying informed of sales trends, stock positions and local competition

4)  Implement the very highest standard of customer care and service

5)  Promote all Age UK Birmingham products through cross selling

6)  Promote any income/reward generating schemes as directed by Head of Operations

Manage Resources

1)  Lead and train a team to achieve challenging targets

2)  Recruit, support and co-ordinate the work of staff and volunteers in the shop

3)  Encourage an active interest in the shop and the work of Age UK Birmingham and its associated products and services

4)  Identify and train ’key’ volunteers to deputise for the Shop Manager in the absence of a paid member of staff

5)  Ensure that the shop is adequately staffed at all times and establish an appropriate work rota for staff and volunteers. Trading may include 7 days a week and bank holiday working.

6)  Carry out return to work interviews and assist in attendance management process.

7)  Deal with disciplinary and grievance issues in conjunction with Head of Operations.

8)  Staff appraisal

9)  Team meetings and communication of organisational policies and information

10) Staff retention

Premises

1)  Ensure shop premises are clean and tidy at all times and that goods are displayed in an attractive and presentable manner. Regularly changing window displays to promoted seasons, various events and changing fashion

2)  Ensure the efficient running of the stock room area, with clear guide lines in relation to stock preparation, stock transfer and stock for disposal to name just a few

3)  Ensuring that all statutory responsibilities are met, including Fire and Health and Safety Regulations

4)  Hold shop keys, opening and closing the premises for the trading hours and responding to emergency call out if and when necessary

Stock

1)  Generate stock donations to meet sales requirements

2)  Accept, sort, price, steam and display stock in accordance with Age UK Birmingham guidelines

3)  Researching stock donations to maximise retail price

4)  Ensuring that all stock complies with trading standards

5)  Responsible for stock control, including disposal of unsold or unwanted donations at the best possible return using a computerised EPOS system

6)  Responsible for the administration of brought in stocks and regular stock checks where appropriate.

7)  Rotate stocks between other shops on a regular basis

8)  Using eBay Age UK Birmingham shop to sell items where appropriate

9)  Using local Auction Houses where appropriate

Public Relations

1)  Work with the Head of Operations to promote both your shop(s) and the Age UK Birmingham brand and refer to associated products and services

2)  Enhance the Age UK Birmingham image through a professional retail service, ensuring that all queries about Age UK Birmingham are answered promptly and information held in the shop is up to date and displayed in the appropriate manner.

3)  Maintaining good relations with the public, trade councils, landlords and neighbouring retailers and other departments within the organisation

Administration

1)  Ensure that all Age UK Birmingham shops administrative and financial procedures are followed including banking, weekly returns, shop maintenance, performance returns, staff time sheets and volunteer records

2)  Ensure security of stock and cash on the premises reporting any shortfalls to the Head of Operations

3)  Accurately record required data for Head of Finance and Head of Operations

Other Responsibilities

1)  Work closely with the Head of Operations to ensure any problems in the shop are resolved quickly and efficiently

2)  Undertake any other reasonable and appropriate duties required to achieve performance targets and realise the potential of the shop

3)  Travel within the region when required, to provide cover in other shops or for training activities etc.

4)  Attend and participate in company meetings as and when required

5)  Maintain Absolute confidentiality with regard to all company and charity information
