Purpose of the role

To be responsible for the provision of specialist technical support,in consort with other Theatre Technical staff, including the design and implementation of lighting and sound systems. To supervise, operate and install, technical, stage, and audio-visual equipment, for use within the Sallis Benney Theatre and for university events in other spaces as required. To play an active role in the efficient running and management of the Theatre as directed by the Artistic Director.

Main areas of responsibility:

  • To be responsible for providing specialist technical advice to theatre users, with regard to the presentation of events within the Sallis Benney Theatre and other areas as directed by the Artistic Director.
  • To source, organise and supervise casual technical staff to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the Theatre.
  • Assist with the planning, administration and programme delivery in the theatre and other hire spaces, including high standards of customer liaison and customer service.
  • To control stocks and stores and undertake general housekeeping duties in technical areas including the maintenance, testing, and procurement of equipment.
  • To ensure that all audio and lighting equipment is kept as fully operational as practicable and maintained in a safe condition, carrying out general maintenance, care and repair as required including scheduling maintenance requirements annually.
  • To ensure the provision of health, safety and welfare in the areas the department is responsible for and to meet regulatory standards.

Experience / Demonstrable experience in supporting formal events(eg art shows or theatre events) including hands on rigging experience, technical problem solving and maintenance.

  • Able to operate lighting, projection and sound.
  • Lighting programming skills.
Sound mixing: to range from vocal reproduction to small size live performances.

Other requirements / The role requires occasionally working extended, unsociable and/or irregular hours including late nights, weekends and public holidays of varying length shifts depending on the events.
In addition, there may be changes in schedules at short notice so the ability to be flexible will be required.
The role requires the ability to carry out the physical requirements of the job, which may entail: some lifting and working from heights; sufficient mobility to be able to access and prepare the work areas; sufficient manual dexterity to be able to manipulate and maintain the equipment effectively.
The role supports sound design and lighting and therefore requires the ability to distinguish colours and ability to hear and distinguish sound across the spectrum / A/I

  • Any appointment is generally made at the bottom of the salary range for the grade dependent upon experience and previous salary.
  • This is a part-time post (22.5 hours per week) and is permanent.
  • The role requires occasionally working extended, unsociable and/or irregular hours including late nights, weekends and public holidays of varying length shifts depending on the events. Time off in lieu will be given when this occurs.
