The National Theatre

The National Theatre of Great Britain (NT) is dedicated to making the very best theatre and sharing it with as many people as possible.In its three theatres on the South Bank in London, the NT stages up to 30 productions each year, ranging from re-imagined classics – such as Greek tragedy and Shakespeare – to modern masterpieces and new work by contemporary writers and theatre-makers. The National's work is also seen on tour throughout the UK and internationally, and in collaborations and co-productions with regional theatres. Popular shows transfer to the West End and to Broadway, and through the National Theatre Live program, the NT broadcasts live performances to 2,000 cinemas in 50 countries around the world.

American Associates of the National Theatre

The American Associates of the National Theatre (AANT) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, based in New York, that promotes and supports the work of the National Theatre in both Great Britain and the United States. Since 2005, the AANT has granted more than $20 million to the National Theatre, providing essential funding which supports the NT’s mission to develop world-class productions with affordable ticket prices, while reaching out to artists and audiences of the future through extensive education programs.Working closely with the Head of Development, the Senior Individual Giving Manager is one of four full-time staff members, who are supported by a Board of Trustees and Honorary Council, as well as the National Theatre team in London. Background

The AANT secures the majority of its income from individual donors who are resident in the US and part of the AANT membership program or make major gifts towardsspecific NT productions and programs, plus from US taxpayers living in the UK. The AANT currently has 225 members based in the US giving between $1,000 and $20,000 annually. This has grown by over 50% in the last three years and our goal is to continue building this membership program at the same rate in New York and other key cities around the US (San Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles), increasing the membership base to over 350 members by 2019. The AANT also has a flourishing major gifts program, securing project-specific support from individual donors and working closely with the NT team in London and the NT America producing team to match productions, projects and programs with the interests of current and prospective donors. Moving forward, it also our desire to launch a Planned Giving program, encouraging AANT donors to consider this way of making a lasting contribution to the NT’s future.

Purpose of Job

To work with the Head of Development as anadditional frontline fundraiser to continue significant growth of annual and project-specific support from individual donors based in the US. Specific initiatives for the Senior Individual Giving Manager to deliver in order to achieve this include:

  1. Scheduling and leading one-to-one meetings with current AANT members in New York
  2. Scheduling and leading meetings with prospective donors to discuss AANT membership levels and secure their support at the $1,000+ level
  3. Calling donors to thank them for their support, to discuss their interests and, where appropriate, ask them toconsider increasing their involvement
  4. Workingclosely with AANT board members and current AANT donors to identify and recruit new members, and increase support from existing members
  5. Liaising with AANT Ambassadors in New York, San Francisco, Washington, DC, Los Angeles and Chicago to cultivate and solicit support from their contacts
  6. Preparing and implementing a Planned Giving strategy and engaging donors with supporting the AANT in this way
  7. Database analysis to build prospect lists
  8. Regularly reviewing theatre donor lists in New York, San Francisco, Washington, DC, Chicago and Los Angeles
  9. Developing additional strategies for identifying new supporters in all cities
  10. Coordinating production appeals and launching a compelling annual Giving Tuesday appeal for AANT members and NT ticket buyers based in the US
  11. Preparing project outlines and benefits packages for specific production or program support
  12. Compiling research for briefing notes ahead of donor meetings, for the Head of Development and NT senior Development and Artistic team
  13. Undertaking research into potential donors and matching prospects to projects requiring support
  14. Creating a printed brochure for the AANT Olivier Circle ($20,000) membership level
  15. Setting up a system to send membership renewal reminders by email, in addition to the current system of mailing, in order to encourageprompt renewal
  16. Promoting the matched giving programs available within many US companies to AANT members

Additional Responsibilities

Donor stewardship and solicitation

  • Managing a portfolio of AANT donors and prospects, developing meaningful relationships and identifying opportunities for involvement
  • Answering inquiries from current and prospective members by telephone, letter, email and in person
  • Retaining and increasing AANT member support by delivering an exceptional program of customer care. This includes the delivery of a range of benefits according to giving level, such as personalized booking of NT tickets, tours, restaurants, and ticket booking and RSVPs for AANT events and NT productions in the US
  • Working with the Development Researcher (London based) to learn more about our current supporters

Events

  • Working with the Head of Development to sell Gala tables when planned (usually around Broadway transfers of National Theatre productions)
  • Ensuring prompt donor follow up after events – asking to become members or renew their support, or building a relationship with a view to increased support
  • Co-ordinating invitation lists for AANT major donor cultivation events
  • Helping to plan supporter and cultivation events throughout the year, working with the Senior Development & Special Events Manager
  • Attending events and supporter trips across the year, ranging from small dinners with high-level supporters, to large-scale events for members

Administration and operations

  • Daily administration: telephone, email, mail
  • Filing and maintenance of donor records and the database, Tessitura, including the production of reports and use of prospect management tools
  • Ensuring that the AANT deals with income in a tax efficient manner and complies with IRS regulations
  • Contributing actively to bi-weekly team meetings and strategy planning sessions

General

  • Learning and retaining information about the National Theatre’s mission, programming, productions and initiatives in both the UK and the US to communicate with donors
  • Ensuring that the highest possible standards of customer service are maintained, with a view to encouraging renewal of donations and increased support
  • Maintaining a close working relationship with the Development Department of the National Theatre in London, in particular the Individual Giving team
  • Carrying out any other duties as requested by the Head of Development and AANT Chairman.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Significant experience as a front line fundraiser, with a proven track record of soliciting and closing gifts at the $1,000+ level
  • Knowledge of membership and planned giving programs
  • Proven experience in identifying and maintaining external relationships with high net-worth individuals and board or committee members
  • Systematic approach to fundraising, with excellent attention to detail
  • Outstanding and proven organizational ability
  • Excellent writing skills, including experience of writing copy
  • IT literate with knowledge of relationship databases
  • Knowledge of tax effective ways of giving
  • An appreciation of the arts and theatre

Terms and Conditions

Contract Type:One year fixed term

Hours: 35 per week from 10am – 6pm, although additional hours may be necessary in order to fulfil the post’s requirements

Salary:$65,000 per annum, paid bi-weekly

Vacation: 15 days in the first year, increasing with length of service thereafter

Probationary Period:3 months

Notice Period: 2 months (1 month during probationary period)

401k: Provided after successful completion of 3 month probation period – employees can opt to contribute up to 6% of basic pay and the AANT will make a matching contribution
