About Orchid Cancer Appeal

Over 50,000 men are diagnosed every year in the UK with testicular, prostate and penile cancer. Orchid is the UK’s leading charity working in the area of male-specific cancers.

Established in 1996 by testicular cancer patient Colin Osborne, and the oncologist who saved his life, Professor Tim Oliver, the charity provides support to people affected by or interested in these cancers through funding a world-class research programme, awareness and education campaigns and a range of vital support services. These services include Orchid Male Cancer Information Nurse Specialists, a freephone National Male Cancer Helpline, a Testicular Cancer Counselling Service, a portfolio of information standards accredited publications, an award winning testicular cancer microsite called “Your Privates” and a schools resource pack, a dedicated website, community education Roadshows and a unique Community Golf Programme.

Orchid works closely with health and social care professionals, community groups, schools and universities, other not-for-profit organisations, the business community, MPs and the media to raise awareness of these cancers and to campaign for better care and services. Orchid has achieved significant success in a short space of time and supported thousands of men and their families.

About Cancer Black Care

Cancer Black Care was established in 1995 by Isaac Dweben, following the death of his elder brother from prostate cancer, in response to the lack of appropriate information and level of cancer awareness amongst his African and Caribbean community and the urgent need to redress this gap to avoid further deaths from preventable and treatable cancers by providing a range of support services aimed at raising awareness of cancer within the BME community and influencing the information, care and treatment of cancer to ensure it is appropriate and sensitive to ethnic and cultural need.

Cancer Black Care has extensive experience of engaging with black African and Caribbean communities, delivering high quality cancer support, raising awareness of cancer within the BME community and ensuring it is culturally appropriate and accessible to the communities in need.

About – ‘Changing lives - engaging black African and Caribbean men at risk of or affected by prostate cancer, as well as men from disadvantaged communities’.

Orchid is excited to launch a new 3 year project in collaboration with Cancer Black Care to combine our strengths and expertise to provide focused support to black African and Caribbean men, their families and disadvantaged communities at risk of or affected by prostate cancer, funded by the Big Lottery Fund. To run this project we will be recruiting two new posts; the Prostate Cancer Information Manager – Nurse Specialist and the Project Administrator.

This joint project will assist our two organisations to come together to develop and deliver targeted information and support to overcome the barriers and misunderstandings about prostate cancer amongst black African and Caribbean men and target disadvantaged communities, empowering them with the information they need to deal with risk factors, diagnosis and treatment options, and help them to overcome negative perceptions of the disease and learn how to engage with health services effectively.

This approach will enable our two organisations to make a difference which we could not achieve alone. It will enable us to achieve our shared objectives of tackling the barriers men from black African and Caribbean communities and disadvantaged groups face in seeking help and advice about prostate cancer and delivering better quality information and support for those at risk of or affected by this cancer.
