Dear Applicant

Thank you for expressing an interest in applying to join Ashcroft International Business School (AIBS). The attached papers have been written to provide you with information about the University and AIBS, the position(s) under consideration and the application and selection process. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

AIBS is seeking to make a number of key strategic appointments at a particularly exciting period in its development. These positions (as listed in the advertisement) will play a significant role in the development of AIBS, particularly in relation to its research profile and to developing our expertise in the area of work based learning and corporate education. AIBS has a strong regional presence and a growing national reputation for areas of its course provision and research and is a recognised market leader in particular aspects of its work, notably our courses in international business, much of our work with the public services and our growing portfolio of bespoke corporate education. The appointments we seek to make will build on these strengths and assist us to move into new areas. A key part of our strategy over the next few years is to further develop our international profile and reputation.

The University is implementing a new strategic plan which was launched in 2005 by the current Vice Chancellor, Professor David Tidmarsh. The strategic plan is focussed on both growth and quality. The BusinessSchool’s strategy very much aligns with the University’s strategic plan. The University’s mission is to deliver high quality education, training, research and consultancy that impacts positively on the lives of our students and corporate clients. The BusinessSchool fully buys into these goals.

The business school market place is highly competitive and presents many challenges. As a large full service school, AIBS provides education and research ‘for business’ and we are looking to appoint a number of colleagues who can connect with our mission and vision and share a belief and commitment to our strategy. If you wish to have an informal discussion relating to the position please feel free to contact me on (44) (0) 1245-493131 or by e-mail on

I very much look forward to receiving your application.

Yours sincerely

Professor Martin Reynolds

Dean, AshcroftInternationalBusinessSchool

AngliaRuskinUniversity – An Introduction

AngliaRuskinUniversity is a large, diverse and vibrant modern university. It acquired university status under the Further and Higher Education Act 1992 when it became known as AngliaPolytechnicUniversity. Its origins can be traced back over 100 years in both Cambridge and Chelmsford. The institution in its modern form came out of the merger of Essex Higher Education College and the Cambridge College of Arts and Technology in the late 1980’s to become Anglia Higher Education College. Polytechnic and then University designation soon followed. In October 2005 the university changed its name to AngliaRuskinUniversity. The University has two campuses – Cambridge andChelmsford. Work in Chelmsford is currently on two sites - Victoria Road South and Rivermead. It is anticipated that the Victoria Road South site will close in the next few years as all work in Chelmsford is moved to the Rivermead campus which currently houses the Faculty of Education and the BusinessSchool.

In all, Anglia Ruskin has approximately 27,000 students, of whom a good proportion are part-time. Undergraduates account for some 20,000 students and postgraduates for 7,000. A significant and growing proportion of the University’s income is non-HEFCE generated and there is a broad and distinctive range of professional and in-company programmes. The University has just over 1700 staff.

The University is led by Professor David Tidmarsh, who will be leaving in 2007 to take up a similar position at the University of Central England in Birmingham. The process of identifying his replacement is underway.

Anglia Ruskin aims to serve the needs of the local community whilst also attracting considerable numbers of students from further afield. In all, students from approximately 100 countries study with us in either Cambridge or Chelmsford. The university has a clear commitment to supporting the development of higher education in the Eastern Region and is supported in this by HEFCE.

Anglia Ruskin prides itself on producing graduates who have well development employment skills and who can make a rapid and immediate contribution to the world of work. High rights of post-graduation employment are a sure indicator that the skills of our graduates are valued by employers.

Research at Anglia Ruskin is vibrant and growing in importance, with several departments scoring well in the last RAE. It is planned to do even better this time around.

Professional programmes – both general and bespoke – are a particular and growing strength of Anglia Ruskin. In its approach to professional training, the university aims to equip professionals to achieve higher and earlier in their career.

Further Information for Candidates.

1.Introduction.

AIBS is one of five Faculties of the University. It operates out of both major campuses – Cambridge and Chelmsford. In Chelmsford it occupies purpose built modern facilities - The Michael Ashcroft Building - which was opened in 2003 and was part-funded by a significant donation from Lord (Michael) Ashcroft, an alumnus of the university. In Cambridge, AIBS operates out of more traditional facilities, on the University’s East Road Campus in the centre of the city. AIBS employs circa 80 academic staff and 20 support staff split between the two campuses. The Faculty is managed in an integrated way with senior staff having cross-campus responsibilities. Many courses are offered on both sites. In all, AIBS has over 3000 registered students.

2.Academic Programmes.

Academic work is managed within three primary groups, each the responsibility of a Programme Leader, these are: Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Professional.

A wide portfolio of undergraduate courses is offered in both Cambridge and Chelmsford and well as via several regional partners. As from September 2005 the Faculty assumed responsibility for Tourism and Leisure awards and these are likely to grow significantly in both Chelmsford and Cambridge. A number of the Faculty’s courses are offered via two partners in Malaysia and another in Trinidad. This together with the regional work, represents an important aspect of the Faculty’s work and one in which many colleagues are involved. There are many other links (including) with institutions in France, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Finland and Sweden. Full details of our undergraduate awards can be found on our website anglia.ac.uk

Our postgraduate portfolio includes an interesting variety of awards, including full and part-time MBA, MA International Business which can allow a semester of study with our partner, the HanzeUniversity in Groningen, Netherlands, MA Arts Management and MA Corporate Governance/GradICSA, which gives graduate membership of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. We have strong links with institutions in Hungary and Germany. Full details are on our postgraduate awards are on our website.

We maintain good links with the business professions and offer by part-time study the awards of ACCA, CIPFA, CIM, CIPD and ICSA (as above). The Faculty views professional courses as an area that may allow considerable scope for growth and development.

The Faculty offers a Professional Doctorate (the DBA) and has a growing number of doctoral students.

3.Faculty Staff

Like most similar Business Schools, AIBS employs staff with a wide range of skills and specialisms. Academic Staff are managed within three Departments: Accounting and Information Systems, HRM and Marketing, and Economics and Strategy. Heads of Department have cross campus responsibility for staff and subject development. All staff are expected to contribute across the areas of teaching, course management, research and consultancy and professional development.

The staff base of the Faculty has developed considerably over the past few years with a good number of staff completing PhD’s and several others recruited via external appointment (several more are very close to completion). Staff regularly give papers in the UK and overseas and every effort is made to support colleagues in this regard. Research is co-ordinated by the Faculty Director of Research and the Associate Dean and is managed via several research groups.

Research interests in the Faculty include Corporate Governance, Public Sector Management, International Business, Ethics and Communication in Business, Strategic Studies, HRM and Marketing. This profile has been strengthened by Tourism and Leisure colleagues who moved to the Faculty in September and who have interests in (inter alia) Sustainable Tourism, Low Cost Airlines and Urban Tourism.

As well as conference papers and journal articles, a number of books have been produced by Faculty members.

4.Consultancy and Associated Activity.

Many staff are involved in consultancy and other associated activities. Such activities include: extensive work with the Fire and Rescue Services and increasingly other emergency services; bespoke training for several regional, national and international employers; training for CIPFA Assessors; supporting KTP’s; supporting and providing training for SME’s. The Faculty seeks to respond quickly and flexibly to new initiatives.
