From the Foreign Language Department at TJHSST

For the entering Freshmen who will be taking LEVEL II in Modern Languages and Latin School year 2009-2010

Dear Students:

Congratulations on being admitted to TJHSST! The language requirement in our school is a minimum of three years of study in any of the seven languages we offer: Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Russian and Spanish. However, most students take an additional one or two years of instruction in the language of their choice. Some take two languages, including advanced placement (AP) courses.

Freshmen who wish to begin a new language will have their choice among Chinese I, German I, Latin I, and Russian I. You can learn more about those languages by speaking to the respective teachers when you come to TJ to register in April. (Due to current budgets cuts, it is likely that French I and Spanish I will not be offered at TJHSST in the 2009-2010 school year, although levels II through V of those languages will be available. It is assumed that students interested in French and Spanish have already completed Level I in the 8th grade, and will continue in Level II as freshmen at TJHSST. Should this situation present a problem, please speak with the Division Manager, Mrs. Delfosse at the April Freshmen Registration.

o  If you have a workbook from level one, use it to review material through the summer. If you do not have a workbook, review your notes from Level I.

o  Seek opportunities to hear, read and most importantly speak the language you are studying during the summer. After July 1, 2009, go to the listed below TJ site and click on your language to find some resources that will be useful for you during the summer. If you feel you need additional work, you will find many activities, and a placement test that you can take to see if you are well prepared for Level II or Level III of the language you are studying.
