Job Title:Postdoctoral Research Assistant (Medicinal Chemist)

Line Manager:Prof. S A Ward

Job Aim:To work with a team of biologists, pharmacologists and medicinal chemists (including Scientists at the University of Liverpoolsupervised by Prof P O’Neil) involved in the discovery and development of novel peroxide drug candidates targeting malaria.

Competencies:Experience in Organic Chemistry/ Medicinal Chemistry.

Summary of role: The successful applicant will be part of a small chemistry team involved in organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry and chromatographic separations and purification

Main duties:

Take a leading role in the generation of novel routes of synthesis of peroxide based chemical entities towards the project’s milestones/deliverables

Design and synthesis of target compounds identified within the group using heterocyclic/aromatic synthetic chemistry approaches

Monitor literature for application of best practices and methodologies

Responsible for the accurate recording, dissemination and archiving of chemistry data in line with industry standards

Take a role in the preparation and writing of scientific reports and peer-reviewed publications

Assisting with the daily running of the medicinal chemistry facilities

Perform 1H/13C NMR and LC MS and HPLC

Responsible for the preparation, maintenance and communication of methodologies and data to other members of the group

Responsible for working in a safe manner adhering to local and legal requirements

Any other duties commensurate with the role

Essential / Desirable
Education & Training / PhD in Chemical Sciences / Some knowledge of basic pharmacology
Experience / Extensive experience in synthetic organic chemistry
Experience in endoperoxide synthesis, handling reactive peroxide intermediates
Knowledge of antimalarial drug development
Training in the development of SAR for biologically active compounds
Publication record in Chemistry/Pharmacology journals
Relevant experience of working within a research laboratory
Well developed research skills with the ability to present research findings in oral or written format
Working to targets and deadlines / Molecular modelling expertise
Publication record in high impact Chemistry/ Pharmacology journals.
Experience of working in the industry/pharma
Skills & Abilities / Organic synthesis, purification techniques such as silica gel chromatography and HPLC methods
Ability to generate research ideas
Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) with the ability to communicate at all levels
Excellent organisational skills
Computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
Team player
Flexible attitude to work / Parallel synthesis techniques and use of microwave reactors
Knowledge of asymmetric synthesis and stereochemical control
Knowledge / Knowledge of modern medicinal chemistry and chemistry
