Job purpose
This one to one support role addresses the issues that students with specific learning difficulties (SpLD) have in acquiring, retaining and recalling information in written and spoken language, as well as the range of memory, organisational, attention and numeracy difficulties that students with SpLD face, in an HE context.
These difficulties may have been identified already but present a much greater barrier to learning when a student faces the academic challenges of HE work.
This support should develop a students’ study skills enabling them to become an independent learner. It should be tailored to a student’s individual needs and professionals delivering this support should set out clear goals and timescales for achieving these goals. Some students will require ongoing support throughout their course; others might require less support as the course continues; while some students might need additional support as the demands of their course intensify.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Provide one to one study skills tuition to students enabling them to develop independent learning strategies.
- To provide bespoke sessions for each student according to the needs of the individual student.
- Deliver tuition according to Hereford Access Centres guidelines and code of conduct.
- A flexible approach to working hours is required and evening or weekend working may be required.
- Manage paperwork effectively, i.e. completing time sheets and Individual Learning Plans.
- You will be expected to represent Hereford Access Centre and RNC in a professional manner, this includes engaging in CPD in and adhering to all policies, including confidentiality, lone working and safeguarding.
- To arrange study sessions with students at mutually convenient locations.

- An in-depth understanding of the effects of specific learning difficulties on language and learning in a HE context, and an in-depth knowledge of how these disabilities affect particular areas of learning.
- An awareness of the strengths which students with specific learning difficulties can bring to a learning situation and the skills to help students to make use of these strengths and overcome barriers to learning.
- Able to assess learner’s needs and devise an appropriate Individual Learning Plan.
- The ability to deliver and tailor study skills training in a structured way, appropriate to the individual student’s needs and course requirements, and to reduce or increase the amount of support, as required..
