Job Title:Mechanical Engineering Technician

Salary:£22,029 - £26,274per annum, depending on skills and experience. Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance

Contract Status:This is a permanent post. A six month probationary period applies to this position.

Hours of Work:36¼ hours per week (full-time) 5 days per week, 8.30am-4.50pm Mon-Thurs, 8.30am-4.25pm Fri.

Location:Faculty of Engineering, University Of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham. NG7 2RD

Reporting to:Senior Technical Manager

Purpose of the New Role:Provide multi-skilled engineering expertise and practical technical advice to academic and research staff and student groups to the Faculty’s requirements, including design, manufacture and construction of a variety of rigs supporting research and teaching.

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / Development and construction of components, apparatus and test specimens for teaching requirements and particular research experiments and teaching requirements, to a high degree of precision. / 30%
2. / Supervision of staff and students in the development of research rigs within the Department, including all aspects of Health & Safety. Also offer advice on the safe operation and use of hand tools. / 25%
3. / Design, build, operate and maintain experimental rigs and equipment including cooling systems and environmental engineering test rigs. / 15%
4. / Advice and assistance to both research and academic staff and to students in the design, construction and provision of environmental teaching laboratory workshops, including PV panels, wind tunnels and cooling systems. / 15%
5. / Operation, maintenance, servicing, repair and adjustment of engineering machinery and laboratory equipment with the use of multi discipline engineering techniques. / 10%
6. / Demonstrate engineering techniques to staff and students across the Faculty and train technicians, students and researchers in the safe use of equipment. / 5%
7. / Any other duties associated with the role.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education / Minimum BTEC National Level or equivalent qualifications, plus significant experience in a relevant technical role.
Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship.
Skills/Training / Full range of engineering skills across a wide range of engineering processes and machines.
Operation of all general engineering m/c tools to produce components to precise limits and tolerances.
Wide range of practical ‘hands on’ skills and engineering principles. / Advanced level of skills in design and improvisation.
Experience / Ability to communicate with academics, researchers and students at all levels.
Proven technical specialist knowledge and understanding in own technical area. / Full working knowledge of the design of engineering equipment.
Statutory/Legal / An understanding of work related regulations and procedures and an understanding of non-compliance on other staff and the University (e.g. Health and Safety)

Alterations and modifications to designs and materials to improve functionality, reliability and safety.
Ordering of tools, parts, etc. within a limited budget.

Additional Information

Ability to communicate with academics, researchers and students at all levels and a positive (can do, will do) attitude are necessary skills. As are a flexible approach and a willingness to accept responsibility.
