Purpose of the New Role:
The role is to conduct research in the area of sustainability assessment of current and developing road pavement and railway materials and operations. As part of a research team, the successful candidate will establish current sustainable practices in road pavement and railtrack construction, in the EU and USA. This will form the benchmark, to which the sustainability of new practices developed in other work packages of the project can be compared. A broad review has been undertaken of the factors that should be addressed in sustainability assessment of products and practices in this sector and this will form the justification for the indicators chosen for the assessment of new practices, developed in PhD studies here and at other project partners, University of Palermo (IT) and IFSTTAR (FR). Now, data requirements for assessment of the new practices will be defined and benchmark case studies developed, against which these practices can be assessed. A further requirement is to work alongside other researchers in partner institutions to assist them in developing an assessment tool. This work is part of the framework of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network ‘SUP&R ITN – Sustainable Pavements & Railways’ with opportunities to join network wide training events and international collaboration. The successful applicant will be appointed as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow.
