Job title:Major Gifts Fundraising Manager

Salary:£40,000 per annum

Location:The Poppy Factory, Richmond, Surrey

Hours:Full time, 37.5 hours a week. There may be requirement for evening and/or weekend work for which time off in lieu will be given. The role will also require occasional travel within the UK to meet potential donors and provide support to a limited number of general fundraising events.

Purpose of the role:

Building on the potential from existing warm relationships with a number of HNWI’s to develop and implement a Major Donor strategy which delivers restricted and unrestricted income over multi-year planned giving programmes.

To line manage a new post of Individual Giving and Legacy Fundraiser.

To support the Head of Fundraising in the further development of the fundraising programme to achieve the strategic objective of diversifying the fundraising portfolio to ensure stability and security for the future.

To deputise for the Head of Fundraising taking a leadership role within the function, providing support to Head of Fundraising in the development, management and delivery of the fundraising strategy and team.

Principal Duties:

Strategy and Planning

  • Create a three year Major Donor strategy to meet the immediate and longer term needs of the charity.
  • Working with the Head of Fundraising and Trust Fundraising team, undertake an audit of the existing supporter database to identify and research major donor prospects and insights.
  • Using research tools, create major donor profiles to inform case for support and stewardship plans.
  • Manage factory visits and other major donor cultivation events as appropriate.
  • Identify and develop necessary systems and processes to support the growth of major donor income across the charity.

Income Generation and Donor Stewardship

  • Using our network of staff, trustees and supporters as well as externally available resources and databases, identify, research, approach and cultivate new and existing prospects.
  • Work with vice patrons, trustees, colleagues and supporters to facilitate personal introductions and meetings with prospects. Provide briefings for Poppy Factory representatives involved in meetings or events with major donors.
  • Working with the Head of Fundraising, identify suitable projects within the charity’s plan to build cases for support and wish lists for new and existing donors. Create tailored presentation materials to evidence the need and personal, timely reports to evidence the impact.
  • Develop and implement donor care and stewardship programmes. This will include, but not be limited to written communications and reports, face to face meetings and a programme of events and visits.
  • Identify and manage the coordination of acknowledgment and recognition opportunities.

Managing Relationships

  • Develop and manage relationships with new and existing major donors, trustees and influential stakeholders to ensure successful solicitation of major gifts, repeat gifts and increased value gifts.
  • Work closely with the CEO, trustees, staff and existing supporters to map and build on their networks and mobilise introductions / asks.
  • Maintain a thorough data management system, using our existing CRM system to track and record communications with prospects and donors.
  • Staying informed of sector developments, market place and trends, influencing and informing the development of major donor giving.
  • Working with the Head of Fundraising to manage the major donor income and expenditure budget, allocating resources to achieve maximum value, reporting and re-forecasting as required.
  • Acting as an Ambassador for The Poppy Factory at external events

Management

  • To be line manager to the Individual Giving and Legacy Fundraiser providing management and support as follows:

(a) to develop and agreeobjectives and work plans in line with the overall fundraising strategy and plan;

(b) to monitor performance through regular one to one meetings, providing regular and honest feedback and guidance as needed to support staff achieve objectives and improve performance;

(c) to undertake annual appraisal and performance reviewsensuring development needs are identified and included in staff personal development plans.

  • To support the Head of Fundraising acting as Deputy to the Head of Fundraising in her absence and taking delegated responsibility for projects/ongoing work as necessary.
  • To contribute knowledge and expertise in the further development and delivery of the fundraising strategy
  • To contribute to the development of the fundraising function

Person Specification

Essential Experience, Skills and Capabilities

  • Significant experience and demonstrable experience of fundraising with a track record of achieving income against agreed targets.
  • Experience of major donor fundraising, with a good understanding of the relevant fundraising market and trends.
  • Proven track record of personally securing gifts in excess of £10k
  • Ability to apply a broad range of communication skills to influence, motivate and persuade a wide range of people to donate.
  • Experience of using research to build donor profiles
  • Demonstrable experience of recruiting new donors
  • Demonstrable and highly developed interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Excellent networking and influencing skills at the highest level.
  • Able to inspire and motivate support and engagement.
  • Experience of developing and delivering exceptional donor stewardship programmes
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to meet deadlines, plan, prioritise and work under pressure.
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation and regulations applicable to fundraising activities e.g. Data Protection, Gift Aid and VAT legislation
  • Familiar with Institute of Fundraising codes of practice
  • A thorough understanding of tax efficiencies relating to significant donations.
  • IT literate with ability to use Microsoft office
  • Staff management experience
  • Degree level education (NB: candidates without a degree but with significant experience will be considered)
  • Self-starting ability, capable of acting on own initiative and highly motivated to meet personal and team targets and objectives
  • Good IT skills (MS Office)
  • Empathy with the aims and objectives of the Poppy Factory
  • Good team player with a collegiate approach to sharing experience and information.
