Job Title:International Policy and Advocacy Intern

Reporting to:Programmes Development Manager

Based at:Chance for Childhood’s office - Farnborough, Hampshire (30mins from London Waterloo / Clapham Junction)

Hours: 2-3 days per week but hours are flexible to fit around other commitments.

Duration:A minimum commitment of 3 months, with the possibility for extension.

Salary: This position is unpaid but reasonable travel expenses will be covered.

Chance for Childhood is also committed to providing a tailored mentoring programme, ensuring the person’s specific learning objectives are met throughout the internship. This may include advice on careers in the sector and mock interviews.

Background:

Chance for Childhood is seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated student to support the development of the charity’s programmes strategy at a time of growth and expansion.

Our journey continues to be highly ambitious and exciting, as we have recently merged with Street Child Africa, whose values and objectives mirror our own. We are also initiating a strategic shift in operations with the recent registration of our East African Hub, ensuring an increased presence and support to our local partners.

To meet these challenges, we are recruiting an ambitious intern with a passion for social justice, a keen interest in issues affecting children and young people in the countries where we work, and an appetite to learn and contribute to making a difference.

Purpose:

Support to the Programmes Team in developing Advocacy Strategies for our flagship programmes in Central and East Africa; and ensure these feed into our Country Strategies, support to developing new and existing concepts that will inform proposals to a range of Foundations and Institutional donors in the pipeline, through desk-based research and liaising with stakeholders, support the production of advocacy and learning materials for internal and external dissemination; provide general administrative support to the Programmes team where required.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Programme Support: Undertake desk-based research and literature reviews on specific areas designed to support the development of the projects and programmatic strategies. This might include liaising with other organizations to seek best practices and promote information sharing or participating in dialogue with our local partners in order to refine programme strategies and policy. Our current priorities include a) research on innovative methodologies for our Inclusive Education and Access to Justice projects; b) research into juvenile justice and GBV prevention interventions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; and c) initiating a Global Policy review of issues which influence our operations d) assisting with other desk-based research.
  1. Alongside the Programme Development Manager, support the development of country-specific advocacy strategies in line with current and future project objectives
  1. Synthesise news and reports on current international debates and campaigns around access to justice, inclusive education and development and provide regular narrative reviews to Chance for Childhood’s team.
  1. Initiate a Global Policy review of issues, events and milestones which affect Chance for Childhood’s operations and which feed into their advocacy strategy.
  1. Identify and implement opportunities to raise the profile and voice of Chance for Childhood, including mapping relevant Conference and Networking opportunities in 2017
  1. Support Chance for Childhood’s implementing partners with the strategy, planning and implementation of local advocacy activities.
  1. Learning and Communication: Support the Programmes Team to identify platforms for the dissemination of programme related material including learning outcomes from the M&E processes. This will also include supporting the production of topic-specific summaries highlighting key data and statistics relevant to our work.
  1. Communications and Advocacy: Lead on updating Chance for Childhood's social media accounts (Twitter and Facebook). When required, assist with producing donor and marketing collaterals such as prayer diaries, leaflets, and posters. Assist with updating website blog and news.

Person Specification:

Essential

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (International Relations, Social Sciences, Development Studies…etc).
  • Passionate interest in international development;
  • Proven qualitative and quantitative research skills;
  • Ability to conduct literature reviews and synthesize complex documents;
  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Excellent written English and verbal communication skills;
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Powerpoint, Excel and Word;
  • Strongorganisation and time management skills and ability to juggle different demands and priorities
  • Open to learning new skills and ability to take initiative when required

Desirable

  • Master degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent working experience
  • Portuguese and/or French language skills preferred;
  • Understanding of child protection issues;
  • Overseas NGO / Development experience;
  • Strong track record of working effectively as part of a small team
